Kolkata Clubs Embrace Yoga Ahead of PM Modi's International Day of Yoga Event
Kolkata Clubs Host Yoga Sessions Before PM Modi's Yoga Day

Kolkata: The city's club circuit has shifted into yoga mode in the lead-up to Sunday's International Day of Yoga event on Red Road, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to lead the main programme.

Clubs Organize Yoga Sessions Throughout the Week

Several of Kolkata's prominent clubs, including those with a strong sporting and fitness culture, have arranged yoga sessions throughout the week. This has turned the build-up to the marquee event into a calendar of wellness activities across club lawns, rowing decks, and open spaces.

Tollygunge Club Kicks Off Early

Tollygunge Club was among the early starters, hosting a yoga session on Tuesday. The 45-minute session for members was conducted by instructors from the Bihar School of Yoga. “Since instructors from the yoga school were in the city, we decided on hosting a session early in the week before they got busy with the events,” said club CEO Brig V Ganapathy (retd).

Most Clubs Choose Saturday for Events

Most clubs, however, have chosen Saturday, the eve of Yoga Day, to hold their events. This allows members to participate before the official programme on Sunday morning.

Calcutta Rowing Club will organise its first session on the club lawn overlooking Rabindra Sarobar at 7.30 am on Saturday. “We consciously avoided hosting the session on Sunday as members could have engagements at other venues,” said club secretary Chandan Roy Choudhury.

Calcutta Cricket & Football Club will hold a yoga sadhana session on Saturday morning in association with Bharat Yoga Yatra. The club had originally planned the event earlier in the month but shifted it closer to the Yoga Day programme. “We had initially scheduled the session on June 13 but deferred it to June 20,” said CC&FC secretary Col S Banerjee (retd).

Sunday Sessions at Bengal Rowing Club

On Sunday, Bengal Rowing Club will organise a yoga session for members, where instructors from the Bihar School of Yoga are scheduled to guide them. “We expect a turnout of 150-200 members for the event,” said club governing body member Ujjal Kumar Dugar.
