The Anatomy of Sound in Sanskrit
For instance, sounds like kh and gh can only be produced from the root of the tongue without any movement. Sounds such as ta and da require the tongue to touch the palate. Dental sounds include th and dha, while pa and bha are formed by closing the lips—you cannot pronounce them without this action.
Om: The Primordial Sound
Examining the word Om reveals fascinating insights. It begins with the sound Aa, originating from the root, and ends with ma, closing the mouth cavity. This progression covers the entire vocal cavity, making Om encompass all existing sounds. It is considered the base of all sounds, the primordial sound that signifies creation, manifestation, and end.
Om can be broken down into three distinct sounds: Aa, Uu, and Mm. Aa is produced from the abdominal cavity, symbolizing creation from void or nothingness. Uu comes from the mouth cavity, representing the journey between life and death. Mm is formed by closing the lips, signifying the end or moksha (liberation). Om is the sound of everything, even present in your breath—inhalation sounds like Au and exhalation like Mm, embodying creation and elimination.
As Maharishi Patanjali stated, Tasya Vachak pranav Om is the connotation to God that connects you to the higher self.
Methods of Chanting Om
There are various ways to chant Om, each offering unique benefits. Here are a few techniques:
- Breaking the Sound: Chant Aa with a prolonged sound, pause, then Uu prolonged, pause, and Mm prolonged. Repeat this sequence as long as comfortable.
- AUM in One Stretch: Chant A-U-M continuously. Start with Aa from the abdomen using the diaphragm, move to Uu using the chest and throat cavity, and end with Mm using the lips and facial muscles. Begin with 5 rounds daily, gradually increasing to 9-11 rounds.
- Silent Chanting: This is the highest form of practice. Sit in a meditative pose with eyes closed and chant Om mentally. This method connects you to subtle dimensions of life, enhancing awareness of the subconscious mind.

Om is the language of the universe, born from its sound. Chanting allows you to feel vibrations from the bottom to the top of your being, connecting to the root of your existence.
