Selena Gomez on Voice Changes, Lupus Arthritis & Melasma

Hollywood star Selena Gomez recently opened up about feeling "vulnerable" regarding changes in her voice, while also addressing other personal health matters linked to her lupus diagnosis. The 33-year-old actress and singer shared these intimate details during a live social media session with her fans.

Addressing Vocal Changes and Health Realities

During the interactive session, a fan inquired about the noticeable shift in Gomez's vocal tone over recent years. The 'Lose You to Love Me' singer acknowledged she has received this question multiple times. "Yeah I've gotten this question a few times. The voice thing," she said, before pausing briefly. "There's no excuse. I don't really care. I think my point is that sometimes things happen. I get weird. My throat kind of swells inside sometimes. That's all," Gomez explained candidly.

This isn't the first time Gomez has been transparent about her health journey. As reported by 'People' magazine, she has previously discussed the challenges stemming from her diagnoses of lupus and bipolar disorder.

How Lupus Shaped Rare Beauty's Inclusive Design

In a revealing episode of the 'Good Hang with Amy Poehler' podcast, Gomez detailed how lupus has physically affected her, leading to arthritis in her fingers. This personal struggle directly influenced the user-friendly design philosophy of her cosmetics line, Rare Beauty.

"I have arthritis in my fingers, and that's due to my lupus," she shared. Gomez recalled a specific moment before launching her brand: "I remember before the brand, I was trying to open a water bottle and it hurt really bad before I was on the right medication." This experience became a driving force behind her product development. "We somehow inherently made the products easy to open, and then we realized, wait, they kind of have to be that way. And then we started to make every product with the intention of (working for) anybody who (has) dexterity problems."

Lighthearted Moments and Sun Safety Advice

Beyond the serious discussions, Gomez also fielded lighter questions about her well-being. Last week, via a video on her Instagram Stories, she responded with humour to a query about facial hair. A makeup-free Gomez told viewers, "someone made me laugh because they asked me, 'How do you shave your mustache?'"

She clarified that what people might perceive is not stubble but a skin condition. "I then went on to point out that I don't have a five o'clock shadow, but instead the discoloration was due to 'my melasma'," she said. Gomez was open about managing the condition, stating, "I take care of it and treat it, but yeah it's there. I totally get it. It's from the sun." She used this moment to encourage her followers to use sunscreen regularly for protection.

Through these frank conversations, Selena Gomez continues to connect with her audience by normalizing discussions around chronic illness, mental health, and everyday bodily changes, all while promoting inclusivity and self-care.
