Portugal's Consulate and Instituto Camões Launch 14th Edition of Lusophone Film Festival

The Consulate General of Portugal in Goa, in collaboration with Instituto Camões, Panaji, officially inaugurated the fourteenth edition of the Lusophone Film Festival on Friday. This significant cultural event is being hosted across three Indian states: Goa, Maharashtra, and Hyderabad, marking a broad celebration of Portuguese-language cinema.

Festival Details and Film Lineup

The festival, which will run until February 15, features an impressive selection of 20 feature and short films. These works span a diverse range of genres, including comedies, dramas, documentaries, and animated films. Each film offers a unique window into the rich cultural and civilizational aspects of Portuguese-speaking nations around the world.

The inaugural film, 'The Memory of the Smell of Things' by director Antonio Ferreira, sets the tone with an intimate portrait that delves into themes of bodily vulnerability, the burdens of memory, and the profound strength of human empathy.

Highlighted Films and Special Screenings

Among the notable entries is 'Banzo', a co-production between Portugal, France, and the Netherlands, directed by Margarida Cardoso. This film holds special distinction as Portugal's official nomination for the Oscars in the Best Foreign Film category, underscoring its artistic merit and international acclaim.

The festival will conclude with the screening of 'A Wolf Among the Swans', hailed as one of the best Brazilian films premiered in 2025. Directed by Marcos Schechtman and Helena Varvaki, this compelling narrative follows Thiago Soares, a young man from the suburbs of Rio de Janeiro who transitions from hip-hop to the disciplined world of classical ballet. The closing ceremony will take place at the historic Maquinez Palace in Panaji.

Youth-Focused Sessions and Additional Venues

On Saturday, the festival dedicates its first two sessions, from 2 PM to 6 PM, to younger audiences. This segment includes screenings of 'Fita Cor-de-Rosa' (2022) by Cape Verdean director Mon de Anjo, 'Lindo' (2023) by Margarida Gramaxo, 'A Bola' (2025) by Brazilian director Filipe Rafaeli, and 'Pacarrete' (2020) directed by Allan Deberton.

All films are presented in Portuguese with English subtitles, ensuring accessibility for a wider audience. In addition to the main venues, screenings will also be held at Goa University in Taleigao and Parvatibai Chowgule College in Margao, expanding the festival's reach within the region.

This edition of the Lusophone Film Festival not only promotes cinematic excellence but also fosters cultural exchange and appreciation for the diverse narratives from Portuguese-speaking communities globally.
