Attukal Pongala 2024: Kerala Minister Promises Smooth Festival

Kerala Minister Vows Impeccable Organization for Attukal Pongala Festival 2024

In a significant announcement, Kerala's Devaswom Minister V N Vasavan has pledged that the upcoming Attukal Pongala festival will be conducted with utmost precision and without any complaints. The festival, scheduled to take place from February 23 to March 4, is one of the largest religious gatherings of women in the world, drawing devotees from across the state and beyond.

Enhanced Security and Safety Measures Announced

Speaking at a review meeting held at the Attukal temple office in Thiruvananthapuram, Minister Vasavan outlined a comprehensive plan to ensure the safety and smooth functioning of the event. He emphasized the need for robust security arrangements, instructing officials to deploy as many women police officers as possible to cater to the predominantly female devotees. Additionally, fire force and excise officials will be stationed in large numbers to handle emergencies and maintain order.

A full-time control room will be established on the temple premises, operating under the direct supervision of the district administration. This central command center will coordinate all activities and respond promptly to any issues that may arise during the festival period.

Health and Sanitation Initiatives Prioritized

To safeguard public health, the minister has mandated joint inspections by the food safety and health departments. These inspections will focus on detecting coliform bacteria in drinking water, ensuring that the water supply remains safe for consumption by the thousands of attendees.

In light of past incidents where expired products were sold during the festival, food safety officials will intensify their vigilance on the temple grounds. The minister has also suggested that the local corporation make registration mandatory for all vendors, a move aimed at regulating the sale of food and other items and preventing the distribution of substandard goods.

Logistical and Infrastructure Support Detailed

The festival's scale necessitates extensive logistical support, and Minister Vasavan has confirmed several key arrangements:

  • Transportation: The Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) will operate 700 buses to facilitate the movement of devotees. An additional 250 buses will run as part of a budget tourism initiative, making the festival more accessible to pilgrims from various economic backgrounds.
  • Water Facilities: The water authority will set up 1,600 temporary drinking water connections and showering points to meet the hydration and hygiene needs of the massive crowd.
  • Sanitation: Door-to-door campaigns will be organized under the leadership of the sanitation mission to promote cleanliness and waste management in the area.

Special Declarations and Bans for Festival Period

In a bid to create a conducive environment for the festivities, several administrative measures will be implemented:

  1. The 28 wards surrounding the Attukal temple will be declared a festival zone, streamlining management and security efforts.
  2. A public holiday will be granted on the main day of the festival, allowing devotees to participate without hindrance.
  3. A liquor ban will be enforced from 6 PM on the eve of the festival until 6 PM the following day, ensuring a sober and respectful atmosphere.

Healthcare Provisions for Attendees

The health department will operate a dedicated control room from February 23 until the festival concludes, providing round-the-clock medical assistance. A special medical team, including paediatricians, will be on standby to cater to children participating in the festival's race events, highlighting the government's commitment to the well-being of all age groups.

Minister Vasavan's proactive approach underscores the Kerala government's dedication to preserving the cultural and spiritual significance of the Attukal Pongala festival while ensuring it is a safe and memorable experience for everyone involved.
