BC Jail Guard Ramandeep Rai Gets 2-Year Sentence for Inmate Relationship
BC Jail Guard Sentenced for Inmate Relationship

Former British Columbia women's correctional officer Ramandeep Rai, of Indian origin, has been handed a two-year conditional sentence to be served in the community for breach of trust. The sentence stems from her developing an alleged romantic relationship with an inmate at the North Fraser Pretrial Centre in Port Coquitlam and helping him keep a cellphone, which the inmate later used for drug trafficking.

Details of the Offence

Rai, who worked as a jail guard at the facility, entered into a relationship with an inmate and facilitated his possession of a contraband cellphone. The inmate used the phone to conduct drug trades while incarcerated. According to defence counsel Gagan Nahal, Rai did not report the inmate's activities to authorities and instead turned a blind eye. The court acknowledged that Rai was unaware of the drug trade and did not profit financially from her actions.

Defence Statement

Defence lawyer Gagan Nahal stated, "Rather than reporting it to the authorities, she kept a blind eye. My client agreed that she made a mistake, she is not denying her role and she is going to pay the consequences for the next two years with this house arrest community jail sentence and a criminal record." Nahal emphasized that Rai did not gain any profit and will face lifelong repercussions. "Rai has not made any profit. She is going to be suffering from lifelong consequences as a result of this case that is a big deterrent for a young girl who is 31-years-old. And that is going to haunt her for the rest of her life," he added.

Conditions of the Sentence

Rai's sentence includes several conditions, such as a curfew and community service. She also lost her father a few months ago, which was noted in court. Addressing the court, Rai acknowledged that her actions were not a minor mistake and that she had exposed her colleagues to risk. The court recognized that she had no financial gain from the inmate's drug trade.

Impact and Deterrence

The case highlights serious breaches of security within correctional facilities. The two-year conditional sentence, served in the community, aims to hold Rai accountable while allowing her to avoid incarceration. The defence argued that the criminal record and public shame serve as significant deterrents for others in similar positions of trust.
