Attukal Pongala Festival: Temple Authorities Restrict Hearth Lighting on New Granite Areas
In a significant announcement affecting one of Kerala's largest religious gatherings, authorities have clarified that devotees will not be permitted to light hearths for the Attukal Pongala festival on the granite-paved areas surrounding the iconic Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple in Thiruvananthapuram. This decision stems from critical preservation and safety concerns following extensive infrastructure upgrades completed under the Central and state governments' Swadesh Darshan Scheme.
Preservation of Newly Renovated Temple Infrastructure
According to the temple's executive officer, the approach roads and entrances (nadakal) around the sacred shrine have recently undergone comprehensive renovation. High-quality granite blocks were meticulously laid in a traditional style as a central component of the development works. The official emphasized that these premium stone surfaces require careful and consistent upkeep to maintain their aesthetic finish and long-term structural durability.
"Lighting makeshift stoves directly on the newly laid granite could cause irreversible blackening of the surface, thermal cracks due to intense heat exposure, and permanent damage to the temple's immediate surroundings," he stated authoritatively. He further elaborated that underground electrical cables and advanced safety systems, installed as integral parts of the Swadesh Darshan project, could also be severely compromised by prolonged exposure to high temperatures. This scenario potentially risks system malfunctions or even serious fire hazards during the densely attended festival.
Continuation of Existing Safety Measures
Temple advisory committee member Karamana Jayan clarified that this restriction is not a novel imposition. "This safety protocol has been implemented consistently over the past several years to ensure the temple premises remain impeccably clean and well-maintained following the significant modifications carried out under the Swadesh Darshan project," he explained. Jayan earnestly urged the vast community of devotees to cooperate fully with temple authorities by utilizing only the specifically designated areas identified for the sacred Pongala ritual.
The Swadesh Darshan initiative at Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple encompassed a holistic upgrade, including extensive granite paving, enhanced ambient lighting systems, and modern underground utility installations.
