Bengaluru's Contemporary Dance Evolution: A 25-Year Journey with Jayachandran Palazhy

When Jayachandran Palazhy first introduced contemporary dance to Bengaluru more than two decades ago, the art form was largely unknown to the city's audiences. Trained in diverse movement practices and fascinated by how bodies interact with social and cultural environments, Jayachandran's artistic path has mirrored Bengaluru's own metamorphosis into a significant center for contemporary movement.

A Collective Effort in Shaping Dance

Reflecting on the 25th anniversary of his organization Attakkalari this year, Jayachandran views this growth not as a solitary accomplishment but as a result of time, openness, and extensive collaboration. "It was never a singular effort; it has always been collective," he emphasizes. "When I started working in Bengaluru, there was hardly any contemporary dance here. Over the years, more dancers began training, performing and creating work in the city."

His own artistic practice expanded through continuous dialogue with dancers, choreographers, and artists from various disciplines. These interactions were instrumental in developing both his unique artistic language and the broader dance ecosystem in Bengaluru.

The Role of Bengaluru's Openness

Jayachandran attributes much of his journey's success to the city's inherently receptive nature. "Bengaluru has a very receptive population," he observes. "There are many young people from different parts of the country, and increasingly from across the world. They are curious about new forms of somatic expression and interested in reflecting on their lives today."

This curiosity, he believes, has consistently created fertile ground for contemporary dance to evolve and thrive within the urban landscape.

Contemporary Dance as Social Pulse

For Jayachandran, contemporary dance is intrinsically linked to its temporal and geographical context. "Contemporary dance is inseparable from the time and place in which it is created," he explains. "It is the embodiment of our reality, our memories, aspirations and the future we imagine. You are rooted in the present, but at the same time, you can almost touch the future."

This philosophical approach has consistently guided his choreographic work and his mentorship of emerging dancers, ensuring that the art form remains a dynamic reflection of societal shifts.

The evolution of contemporary dance in Bengaluru, as witnessed through Jayachandran's 25-year journey with Attakkalari, highlights:

  • The transformation from an unfamiliar art form to a vibrant cultural presence
  • The critical importance of collaborative efforts across artistic disciplines
  • How a city's demographic diversity and openness foster artistic innovation
  • The role of dance in capturing and expressing contemporary social realities

As Bengaluru continues to grow as a metropolitan hub, its contemporary dance scene stands as a testament to the power of artistic evolution through community engagement and cultural exchange.
