Bhartendu Natya Akademi Celebrates 50 Years with Festive Exhibitions and Performances
The campus of the Bhartendu Natya Akademi (BNA) in Lucknow was adorned with vibrant marigold, rose, and jasmine flowers, creating a festive atmosphere for its golden jubilee celebrations. Students dressed in coordinated yellow kurta-pyjamas and suits added to the joyous occasion, marking five decades of the institution's contribution to performing arts.
Government Support and Institutional Growth
Welcoming guests, BNA chairperson Rati Shankar Tripathi expressed gratitude to the state government for its unwavering support. "The institution's infrastructural growth over the years has been possible because of sustained encouragement from the government," he stated, emphasizing the role of public backing in the Akademi's development.
Four Curated Exhibitions Showcase Artistic Heritage
The celebrations featured four meticulously curated exhibitions that drew significant attention from visitors and students alike:
- At the entrance, a display of traditional musical instruments, including tabla, dholak, manjeera, nagada, flute, and harmonium, greeted attendees, highlighting the acoustic foundations of Indian theater.
- A photographic exhibition traced the Akademi's 50-year journey, showcasing images from notable productions that have defined its legacy.
- A third exhibition presented around 50 theatrical masks, depicting birds, animals, gods, demons, insects, and a wide range of human expressions, illustrating the diversity of performance art.
- The fourth exhibition displayed approximately 40 costumes and props used by actors in various roles, offering insights into the visual storytelling aspects of theater.
Dynamic Performances Mark the Inaugural Day
The first day of celebrations commenced with the staging of the play Refund by Mumbai's Rangshila Theatre Group. Based on a work by Hungarian playwright Fritz Karinthy, the play was directed and adapted by Avnish Mishra, blending international influences with local theatrical traditions.
Following this, Varanasi-based artist Vishal Krishna delivered a solo Kathak presentation, depicting episodes from the life of Lord Krishna through his expressive dance, adding a spiritual dimension to the festivities.
Student Reflections on the Legacy
Students shared their enthusiasm for the event, with Toko Telyi remarking, "It feels great to perform at the Akademi's 50th year celebrations," capturing the pride of participation. Another student, Vishal Sharma, noted that the exhibitions provided a deeper understanding of the institution's heritage, saying, "The exhibitions helped me understand the legacy we are inheriting," underscoring the educational value of the celebrations.
The golden jubilee not only celebrated past achievements but also inspired future generations to carry forward the rich traditions of Indian performing arts, as the Bhartendu Natya Akademi continues to foster cultural excellence in Lucknow and beyond.
