Chaitra Navratri Inaugurated with Spectacular Ganga Aarti at Lalita Ghat in Varanasi
The sacred city of Varanasi witnessed a spiritually charged commencement of Chaitra Navratri on Thursday evening, as a grand Ganga Aarti was performed at the exquisitely adorned Lalita Ghat within the Kashi Vishwanath Dham complex. This inaugural ceremony, conducted by seven senior acharyas, drew a massive congregation of devotees who filled the ghat steps hours before the meticulously choreographed ritual began.
A New Daily Ritual for the Holy City
Vishwa Bhushan Mishra, the Chief Executive Officer of the Kashi Vishwanath temple, announced that this aarti marks the start of a new daily tradition. "Ganga flows northward to touch the feet of Lord Vishwanath in Kashi, and now goddess Ganga will be worshipped with daily Aarti at the doorstep of the deity's courtyard," he stated. The decision to initiate this practice on the first day of Chaitra Navratri holds profound significance, as this date is also regarded as the beginning of the new Hindu calendar year.
The choice of Lalita Ghat is deeply symbolic. Mishra explained that Goddess Lalita represents one of the nine forms of Durga, specifically embodying the Tripurasundari form, which is revered as the supreme goddess in Tantra Sadhana. This alignment with Navratri themes enhances the spiritual ambiance of the event.
Cultural Celebrations and Honored Participants
Beyond the aarti, the Kashi Vishwanath temple hosted a series of cultural events to enrich the festive atmosphere. A notable highlight was the installation of nine kalash (urns) by nine distinguished women achievers, including the acclaimed folk singer Malini Awasthi. This gesture underscores the temple's commitment to recognizing and celebrating female empowerment and cultural contributions.
The evening unfolded amidst resonant Vedic hymns and prayers, creating a mesmerizing experience for all attendees. The ritual has been integrated into the city's routine, following the model of the daily Ganga Aartis already performed at other prominent ghats such as Dashaswamedh, Sheetla (the old Dashaswamedh), Assi, and Namo Ghats.
Evolution of Ganga Aarti as a Global Attraction
Over the past three decades, Ganga Aarti at various ghats along the river has emerged as a major attraction, drawing devotees and tourists from across the globe. The Dashaswamedh Ghat typically witnesses the largest crowds, with evenings often becoming overcrowded, making it challenging for visitors to find a vantage point to observe the ritual closely.
In efforts to manage the immense popularity and distribute the crowd, aartis have been introduced at Assi and Namo Ghats. The temple trust initiated the Ganga Aarti at Namo Ghat on September 17, 2025, coinciding with the birthday of Prime Minister and Varanasi MP Narendra Modi. While these additional locations have helped to divide the audience, they have not significantly reduced the overwhelming crowd load at Dashaswamedh Ghat, highlighting the enduring appeal of this spiritual spectacle.
The addition of Lalita Ghat to the roster of aarti sites is expected to further enhance Varanasi's spiritual landscape, offering more opportunities for devotees to participate in these sacred ceremonies while alleviating some of the congestion at other ghats. This expansion reflects the city's ongoing dedication to preserving and promoting its rich cultural and religious heritage.
