Dumas Art Project 2024 Launches in Surat with 'The Future is Now' Theme

The 11th edition of the celebrated Dumas Art Project was officially inaugurated on Sunday at VR Surat, marking the beginning of a vibrant 20-day cultural extravaganza. This year's festival is centered around the compelling theme 'The Future is Now', aiming to explore contemporary artistic expressions and innovations.

Extensive Showcase of Student Artwork

The festival will present an impressive collection of 160 installations, sculptures, paintings, and photographs, all created by talented students from four prestigious art institutes across Gujarat and Maharashtra. The participating institutions include:

  • JJ School of Art, Mumbai
  • The Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, Vadodara
  • Veer Narmad South Gujarat University
  • Anant National University, Ahmedabad

A Decade of Artistic Impact and Accessibility

Sumi Gupta, the curator of the Dumas Art Project, emphasized the initiative's significant role as Surat's only sustained, non-profit art platform. "Our mission has always been to make art accessible to everyone while providing emerging artists with valuable opportunities to display their creativity," Gupta stated.

She revealed that over the past decade, approximately 40 lakh visitors have experienced the project, demonstrating its substantial cultural impact on the community.

Innovative Collaborations and Special Features

This year's edition introduces several groundbreaking collaborations, including 'Kala Car' in partnership with an international automotive company. This unique installation will publicly showcase a car for the first time, symbolizing the intersection of technology, sustainability, and artistic expression.

The festival also features 'Pockets of Hope', a special photography exhibition organized in collaboration with UNESCO, highlighting themes of resilience and optimism through visual storytelling.

Diverse Festival Programming

Beyond the main exhibitions, attendees can enjoy a rich array of activities throughout the festival period, which continues until February 28. The comprehensive schedule includes:

  1. Art Bazaar – A marketplace for unique artistic creations
  2. Young Artists Programme – Initiatives supporting emerging talent
  3. Theatre Performances – Live dramatic presentations
  4. Traditional Art Workshops – Hands-on sessions covering Madhubani, Lippan, and Bandhej art forms
