Hampi Utsav 2026: Karnataka's UNESCO Heritage Site Prepares for Grand Cultural Festival
The historic ruins of Hampi in Karnataka's Vijayanagara district are gearing up to host the much-anticipated Hampi Utsav-2026, a spectacular three-day cultural extravaganza scheduled from February 13 to 15. This annual celebration transforms the ancient imperial capital of the Vijayanagara Empire into a vibrant hub of artistic expression, drawing attention from across the nation and beyond.
Minister Announces Festival Details
Cabinet Minister for Housing, Waqf and Minority Affairs of Karnataka, B.Z. Zameer Ahmed Khan, recently shared exciting details about the festival through a video on social media platform X. The minister highlighted that the world-famous UNESCO World Heritage Site will commence festivities with the traditional Tungabhadra Aarti program. "Participated in the Tungabhadra Aarti program on the occasion of the Hampi Utsav," the minister stated, noting the presence of District Collector Kavita Mannikeri and Former MLA Bheema Naik during the announcement.
Elaborate Arrangements for Massive Crowds
Authorities have made extensive preparations to ensure the festival's grand success, with reports indicating six major stages erected across Hampi to showcase diverse cultural performances. According to a February 11, 2026 report in The Hindu, the main venue—the M.P. Prakash Stage—has been specifically designed to accommodate approximately 50,000 spectators, establishing it as the primary focal point of celebrations.
Additional significant stages include the Krishnadevaraya Stage and Virupaksha Stage, where major performances will be held. Three more stages have been dedicated to highlighting classical, folk, and contemporary cultural presentations. To manage the anticipated surge in visitors, authorities have arranged additional seating for approximately 15,000 people.
Star-Studded Lineup and Special Attractions
This year's festival will feature participation from leading personalities of the Kannada film industry, adding glamour and public appeal to the historic celebration. Expected attendees include prominent actors such as Shivarajkumar, Ashwini Puneeth Rajkumar, Ganesh, Rakshit Shetty, Rachita Ram, Dhananjaya, and Gillinata.
Beyond live performances, organizers have prepared a specially curated light and sound show that will narrate the story of Hakka and Bukka, the founders of the Vijayanagara Empire. This immersive experience aims to recreate the rise of one of South India's most powerful empires, which flourished between the 14th and 16th centuries and left behind architectural marvels that now form the core of Hampi's UNESCO recognition.
To enhance the festive atmosphere, special decorative lighting has been arranged across a 50-kilometer radius around Hampi, transforming the entire region into a visual spectacle after sunset.
Security and Historical Significance
Considering the enormity of the event and expected attendance, comprehensive security arrangements have been implemented. Approximately 2,000 police personnel have been deployed with the objective of ensuring smooth coordination and safety throughout the three-day celebration.
Hampi Utsav represents more than just a cultural event—it's an extravaganza celebrating the state's rich historical legacy. Hampi served as the glittering capital of the medieval Vijayanagara Empire, featuring spectacular attractions including the Virupaksha Temple, the Vittala Temple with its iconic stone chariot, and imposing royal platforms. The festival aims to reconnect contemporary audiences with this artistic and architectural glory by staging performances against these monumental backdrops.
The annual celebration is renowned for its unique blend of history, art, music, and heritage against the dramatic backdrop of Hampi's stone temples and monuments. With lakhs of visitors expected this year, Hampi Utsav-2026 promises to be a landmark event in Karnataka's cultural calendar, showcasing the enduring legacy of the Vijayanagara Empire while celebrating contemporary artistic expressions.
