Holi festivities in Jaipur were notably subdued this year, as confusion surrounding the official festival dates led to split observances across residential complexes. Divergent State Schedules Create Confusion
The root of the confusion stemmed from differing holiday declarations across states. While Rajasthan officially declared holidays on March 2 and 3, several neighboring states, including Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh, celebrated Holi on March 4. This variation occurred because the Phalguna Purnima coincided with a total lunar eclipse on March 3, which made Holika Dahan inauspicious in many regions, prompting them to shift celebrations by a day. Rajasthan, however, retained its original schedule.
Residential Complexes Experience Divided Celebrations
In many Jaipur societies, residents found themselves divided over when to celebrate. Achyut Parashar, a senior housing committee member in Mansarovar, reported that only around 80-90 people gathered on Tuesday morning, with several families from Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh opting to celebrate on Wednesday instead. "Our programme ended by 1pm, whereas in earlier years it continued till 3 or 3.30pm," Parashar noted, highlighting the reduced duration of festivities.
Working Day Restrictions Further Dampen Spirit
Since Wednesday was a working day in Rajasthan, most housing societies did not permit public celebrations in common areas. This forced some residents to celebrate indoors, further diminishing the communal spirit of the festival. Sukhwinder Singh, a resident of Mahapura, shared, "The spirit was low. We didn't have food stalls this time due to poor participation. Being a Punjabi, I celebrated Wednesday, but inside our flat."
Economic Impact on Local Services
The muted celebrations also had an economic impact on local services. Water tanker suppliers reported a significant reduction in demand compared to previous years. Hanuman Meena, a tanker operator, explained, "Last year we supplied six to 10 tankers to large societies. This time, most ordered only one or two," indicating a sharp decline in festive water usage.
