Karnataka Assembly Revives Demand to Preserve Kuvempu's Mysuru Residence as Memorial

The long-standing demand to preserve Udayaravi, the Mysuru residence of poet laureate Kuvempu, as a memorial has once again echoed in the Karnataka legislative assembly. This renewed attention highlights the government's responsibility towards safeguarding the literary icon's enduring legacy.

MLA Raises Issue, Minister Gives Assurances

The issue was prominently raised by MLA K Harishgowda, who represents the Chamaraja assembly segment where Udayaravi is located. In response, Kannada and Culture Minister Shivaraj S Tangadagi provided renewed assurances, stating that the matter would be discussed in detail with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.

Emphasising the profound cultural, historical, and literary importance of Udayaravi, Minister Tangadagi assured legislators that a decision on the memorial project would be taken at the highest level of government.

Background of the Delayed Memorial Project

Udayaravi is a single-storey heritage structure situated in the Vani Vilas Mohalla of Mysuru. The state government had initially announced its preservation as a memorial in the 2018-19 budget. The proposal aimed to:

  • Conserve the historic residence
  • Showcase Kuvempu's life and philosophy
  • Highlight his monumental contribution to Kannada literature

However, the project has faced significant delays, failing to take off despite the initial announcement. This prolonged inaction has caused deep disappointment among the poet's admirers and literary enthusiasts across Karnataka.

Family Involvement and Procedural Hurdles

The matter gained further momentum after Kuvempu's daughter, Tarini Chidananda, submitted a formal proposal outlining specific conditions for handing over the property for development as a memorial. MLA Harishgowda urged the government to respect the family's wishes and remove any procedural bottlenecks that might be hindering progress.

Minister Tangadagi confirmed that preliminary discussions with the family have already taken place, including his visit to Udayaravi in mid-January. He assured the legislative assembly that the family's proposals would be examined thoroughly in consultation with the Chief Minister.

The renewed focus in the assembly underscores the growing urgency to preserve this important piece of Karnataka's literary heritage before it deteriorates further or faces irreversible damage.
