Kashi Vishwanath Temple Overhauls Mahashivratri Celebrations with 44-Hour Darshan

In a landmark decision aimed at enhancing devotee experience, the revered Kashi Vishwanath Temple in Varanasi has announced the complete suspension of all special darshan, VIP protocols, and exclusive rituals for the upcoming Mahashivratri festival in 2026. The temple administration is shifting its focus entirely to facilitating hassle-free jharokha darshan for the massive influx of pilgrims expected during this sacred occasion.

Unprecedented 44-Hour Continuous Darshan

The sanctum sanctorum of the temple will remain accessible for an extraordinary 44-hour period, commencing with the mangla aarti at 3:15 am on February 15 and concluding at 11 pm on February 16. This extended timeframe is designed to allow devotees ample opportunity to immerse themselves in the divine atmosphere without the constraints of time-sensitive entries.

Temple CEO Vishwa Bhushan Mishra detailed the revised schedule, noting that the mangla aarti itself will be conducted between 2:15 am and 3:15 am on February 15, with the sanctum doors opening promptly at 3:30 am. Entry for jharokha darshan will continue uninterrupted until the evening of February 16.

Streamlined Rituals and Crowd Management

To accommodate the anticipated surge in visitors, the temple will implement significant changes to its regular ritual calendar. Instead of the customary aartis—including sandhya, shaptarshi, shayan, and mangla—the temple will perform char-prahar aartis throughout the festival period. Regular aarti schedules will resume following the bhog aarti on February 16.

During all rituals, devotees will participate exclusively through jharokha darshan, which involves viewing the Shivling from outside the sanctum. This method is specifically intended to alleviate congestion and ensure smoother crowd flow, a critical consideration given the temple's experience with overwhelming turnouts during Mahashivratri 2025.

The sanctum doors will be briefly closed from 10:30 pm to 11 pm on February 16 after the shayan aarti, marking the end of the extended darshan period.

Essential Advisory for Devotees

In light of expected wait times stretching between 8 to 10 hours, the temple administration has issued a comprehensive advisory to ensure devotee safety and comfort. Key recommendations include:

  • Prior nourishment: Devotees are strongly urged to eat and hydrate adequately before arriving to prevent health issues such as fainting.
  • Minimal belongings: Pilgrims should avoid carrying bags, mobile phones, leather belts, footwear, or electronic devices, as baggage counters may be overwhelmed.
  • Utilization of support services: The temple will provide water, jaggery, glucose, ORS, and medical assistance, alongside operational lost and found centers.

CEO Vishwa Bhushan Mishra emphasized, "With massive crowds expected, we're advising everyone to fuel up beforehand to avoid complications. Our goal is to ensure a spiritually fulfilling and physically safe experience for all."

This strategic overhaul reflects the temple's commitment to egalitarian worship, prioritizing the collective devotee experience over exclusive access, and setting a new precedent for managing large-scale religious gatherings in India.
