Khajuraho Dance Festival 2024 Unveils Expanded Cultural Universe
The timeless magic of Khajuraho is poised to unfold in a grander, more immersive avatar as the celebrated Khajuraho Dance Festival returns from February 20 to 26, 2024. This year's edition promises to blend classical purity with folk vibrance, showcasing young talent alongside living traditions from across India.
Preserving the Classical Soul While Expanding Horizons
While the festival's core essence remains untouched — the enchanting evening classical dance recitals before the floodlit Kandariya Mahadev temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site — the cultural canvas has widened dramatically this year. Sheo Shekhar Shukla, additional chief secretary for culture, emphasized that "the classical core of Khajuraho fest will stay absolutely undiluted." However, he revealed that around this foundation, organizers are creating "a fuller cultural universe that is more inclusive and wide-ranging."
Nurturing Future Stars: Baal Nritya Samaroh
A significant new addition to this year's festival is the Baal Nritya Samaroh, running from February 20 to 26. This curated platform will showcase gifted child dancers selected from across Madhya Pradesh. Designed as a grooming ground for future classical stars, the initiative aims to:
- Provide serious performance experience to young talents
- Build confidence through professional stage exposure
- Nurture the next generation of classical dance exponents
Cultural Carnival at Shilpgram: A Vibrant Daytime Experience
Running parallel to the classical performances, a sprawling cultural carnival will transform Shilpgram into a vibrant, moving museum of India's cultural diversity. Spread over nearly 45 acres, this daytime extravaganza will feature:
- Folk and tribal dance forms from multiple states
- Indigenous music performances and travel narratives
- Handicrafts exhibitions and souvenir bazaars
- Live craft demonstrations and artist interactions
"This is about giving space to folk, tribal and local art forms alongside classical excellence," explained Shukla. "Visitors will see performances, attend workshops, watch live craft demonstrations and interact directly with artists and performers." The cultural carnival will commence from February 18, two days before the main festival begins.
Sustainable Expansion Through Private Participation
Notably, the festival's expanded format is being powered through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives and private participation, ensuring the cultural enrichment doesn't burden the state exchequer. This innovative funding model allows for broader programming while maintaining financial sustainability.

"From February 18 onwards, Khajuraho will be in complete festival mode," Shukla added enthusiastically. "For cultural travellers, there couldn't be a better time to visit." The festival promises to offer a comprehensive cultural immersion, combining the spiritual elegance of classical dance with the earthy vitality of folk traditions, all set against the magnificent backdrop of Khajuraho's architectural marvels.
