Madhavan Receives Padma Shri from President Murmu
Ranganathan Madhavan, widely known as Maddy, was conferred the Padma Shri at Rashtrapati Bhavan on June 23, 2026, by President Droupadi Murmu. The actor described the experience as 'surreal', noting that his life had come full circle. With the Prime Minister present, he felt time stood still, calling it an honour that no other recognition could match.
A Pan-Indian Journey from TV to Blockbusters
Madhavan began his career in the early 1990s with Hindi soap operas such as Banegi Apni Baat and Sea Hawks. He rose to stardom in Tamil cinema with Mani Ratnam's romantic drama Alai Payuthey (2000) and gained national fame through iconic films like Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein (2001), Rang De Basanti (2006), and the blockbuster 3 Idiots (2009). His recent work in Maidaan marked a game-changer, expanding his range as an actor.
Grounded by Family and Reality
When asked about his success, Madhavan credited a solid sense of reality about his abilities. He emphasized the importance of a family that tells the truth rather than pandering to ego. 'To stay grounded you don't only need a family, you also need a family that tells you the truth and doesn't pander to you or flatter you,' he said. He noted that many actors fail to grow without a strong support system.
Career Landmarks and Future Surprises
Madhavan highlighted Banegi Apni Baat as the series that grew his fan club, and Alai Payuthey as a pivotal opportunity for which he remains indebted to Mani Ratnam. His Hindi debut Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein initially underperformed but later became a cult film. Looking ahead, he promised more changes and surprises, vowing never to repeat himself and to continue reinventing as long as he is active.
Closing on a grateful note, Madhavan said, 'God has been kind. I am blessed with a wife and a son who are a reminder of how blessed I am. By God's grace my son Vedaant is doing well in his chosen field (swimming). I can't complain. I have a charmed life. I wouldn't exchange it for anything in the world.'
