Kolkata's Mayer Bari Suspends Daily Bhog Distribution Amid LPG Shortage Crisis
In a significant departure from a cherished tradition spanning over a century, Mayer Bari in Bagbazar, Kolkata, has suspended the daily distribution of bhog to devotees starting this week. The decision stems from a severe shortage of LPG cylinders, which has critically disrupted cooking operations at this revered shrine.
Historical Significance and Tradition Disrupted
Mayer Bari holds immense spiritual importance as the final residence of Sri Sarada Devi, the spiritual consort of Sri Ramakrishna. She resided in this house from 1909 until her passing in 1920. The tradition of serving prasad dates back to her time, when she personally oversaw the care of visiting devotees, making this suspension a rare and poignant event. Officials note that the last interruption occurred briefly during the Covid-19 pandemic due to gathering restrictions, highlighting the gravity of the current LPG crisis.
Operational Challenges and Devotee Impact
A senior official explained the logistical hurdles: "We were forced to take this decision because of the shortage of LPG cylinders. Cooking requires several cylinders every day, and the current situation made it difficult to maintain regular operations." Typically, the institution uses at least four LPG cylinders daily to prepare meals for around 500 visitors, with 300 to 400 devotees usually receiving the prasad served in the afternoon. Under the existing system, devotees collect lunch coupons between 9:30 am and 10:30 am and return later for the meal.
The suspension has left many locals and devotees disheartened. For residents like Rekha Das, the bhog is not only a religious offering but also a regular source of sustenance. "We have been living here for several years and had bhog from Mayer Bari numerous times. We do not know when things will return to normal," she said. Devotee Bapi Chakraborty, who travels from Sovabazar, echoed this sentiment, stating, "It is disheartening that we are being deprived of the bhog. This prasad is not just food for us, it's a blessing."

Officials have assured that the distribution will resume as soon as normal gas supply is restored. "The distribution will resume as soon as the situation returns to normal," the official emphasized, adding that arranging the required quantities of gas is currently extremely difficult and not feasible for meal preparation. The institution remains hopeful for a swift resolution to restore this vital service to the community.
