For decades, the gentle chug of the Vanbala miniature train winding through Seminary Hills was the soundtrack of childhood in Nagpur. This iconic toy train, more than just a ride, was a cherished ritual and a shared memory for generations. Today, after prolonged silence due to technical failures, a major revival effort worth around Rs 35 crore is finally underway, offering hope to the Orange City.
A Legacy Halted: The Heartbreak of a Silent Queen
Known affectionately as the ‘Queen of Seminary Hills’, Vanbala first opened its 2.3km narrow-gauge track in December 1978. For nearly 50 years, it offered magical journeys through dense foliage, its tiny carriages filled with the laughter of children and families. However, persistent technical snags and ageing infrastructure led to repeated shutdowns.
After a seven-year closure, hopes soared when the train was relaunched in December 2023 following repairs and a Rs 50 lakh investment by Central Railway. But the joy was fleeting. Services stopped again within two years as the tracks had severely deteriorated, and a 2023 proposal to renew 1.9km of track never materialized.
Judicial Intervention Paves the Way for Renewal
The train's fate took a significant turn when the Nagpur bench of the Bombay High Court stepped in. In November 2025, the court took suo motu cognisance, converting the issue into a Public Interest Litigation (PIL). Expressing concern over delays, the bench directed authorities to submit a clear revival plan, emphasizing the train's immense cultural and emotional value to Nagpur.

Blueprints for a Modern, Sustainable Future
Spearheaded by Deputy Conservator of Forest, Nagpur division, Dr. Vinita Vyas, the ambitious plan aims to replace the entire ageing infrastructure. "The engine, tracks, and other infrastructure are almost 50 years old. They are not only breaking down recurrently but are also risky," Dr. Vyas stated, highlighting the need for a complete overhaul.
The new blueprint promises a radical upgrade:
- Replacement of the old diesel engine with an environmentally friendly electric engine.
- A complete new full-fledged narrow-gauge track with more elevation.
- Modern amenities and a contemporary, appealing look for the train and stations.
With detailed estimates being finalized and the High Court closely monitoring progress, Nagpur stands on the cusp of welcoming back its beloved Vanbala. This revival aims not just to restore a ride, but to rekindle a piece of the city's soul for future generations, blending cherished nostalgia with sustainable, modern technology.
