FDA Cracks Down on Unsanitary Conditions
The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has suspended the food business licences of six restaurants in Mumbai, including the popular Flint & Waarsa, following inspections that revealed severe hygiene violations. According to an FDA release, the establishments were found to have rats and cockroaches, expired food items, and inadequate refrigeration facilities.
Details of the Violations
The FDA inspections uncovered grave shortcomings in cleanliness across the six eateries. At Flint & Waarsa, inspectors noted a lack of proper pest control, with rodent droppings and cockroach infestations observed in storage areas. Expired ingredients were also discovered in the kitchen. Other restaurants cited for similar infractions include a mix of fine-dining and casual spots, though the FDA has not disclosed all names pending final notices.
“The food business licences of these establishments were suspended due to grave shortcomings in cleanliness, poor refrigeration, and a lack of a mechanism to address customer grievances,” said an FDA official. The suspensions are part of a broader crackdown on food safety violations in Mumbai, which has seen over 200 inspections this month alone.
Impact on Restaurants and Public
The licence suspension means these restaurants cannot operate until they rectify the issues and pass a re-inspection. For Flint & Waarsa, a well-known chain, this could affect its reputation and customer trust. The FDA has warned that further legal action, including fines, may follow if violations persist.
Consumer rights groups have welcomed the move. “This sends a strong message that food safety is non-negotiable,” said a spokesperson for the Mumbai Food Safety Forum. The FDA urges customers to report hygiene concerns via its helpline.
