The district administration of Sivasagar in Assam has rolled out a fresh one-way traffic system encircling the iconic Borpukhuri Lake. This measure, effective from Monday, is a strategic move to manage vehicular congestion and ensure safety while significant beautification works are underway at this historic site.
New Traffic Route and Official Directive
Under the revised traffic plan, all vehicles must now follow a strict, designated path. The approved route is: Circuit House – PWD Office – District Jail – Piyali Phukan Udyan – Buddha Vihar. The regulation specifically applies to Borpukhuri Paar, the road surrounding the ancient lake.
Pabitra Kumar Das, the Sivasagar District Development Commissioner (DDC), clarified that this arrangement is temporary but will remain in force until the beautification project is fully completed. He appealed to motorists to strictly follow the new route and the instructions of traffic personnel to avoid any inconvenience.
The administration has installed clear signage and deployed traffic management staff along the route to guide drivers. Local residents and daily commuters have been advised to quickly acquaint themselves with this new pattern for smooth compliance.
Preserving a Historical Jewel
The traffic changes are part of a larger initiative to enhance the area around one of Sivasagar's most treasured landmarks. Borpukhuri, also known as Sivasagar Tank, is a man-made lake built in 1734 by Queen Ambika of the Ahom dynasty.
This engineering marvel spans 120 acres (48.6 hectares) and reaches a depth of 64 feet (19.5 meters), showcasing the advanced urban planning and architectural skills of the Ahom rulers in the 18th century. It sits adjacent to the towering Siva Dol, a Shiva temple also constructed in 1734, forming a historic complex that attracts tourists and pilgrims alike.

The core objective of the beautification project is twofold: to elevate the aesthetic appeal of the lake's periphery and to bolster the area's tourism potential, all while meticulously preserving its historical essence. The initiative aims to provide improved amenities for the numerous visitors who explore this heritage site.
