The sacred hill shrine of Sabarimala officially opened its doors for the auspicious Makaravilakku festival on Tuesday evening, marking the commencement of a significant phase in the pilgrimage season.

Opening Rituals and Key Personalities

At precisely 5 PM on Tuesday, the temple sanctum was opened by the chief priest (melshanti) E T Prasad. This important ritual was conducted in the revered presence of the tanthri (supreme priest) Kantararu Mahesh Mohanaru, ensuring all traditional protocols were meticulously followed.

Subsequently, the Malikappuram shrine, dedicated to the deity Malikappurathamma, was opened by its chief priest, Manu Namboothiri. This synchronized opening signifies the start of the special worship period for the Makaravilakku event.

Commencement of Devotee Darshan

Following the ceremonial transfer of the sacred fire to the aazhi (the large lamp) by the Sabarimala melshanti, devotees began their spiritual ascent. Pilgrims climbed the holy pathinettampadi (the 18 sacred steps) to seek the darshan of Lord Ayyappa.

Among the first to offer prayers were senior temple officials, including Sabarimala executive officer O G Biju and administrative officer S Srinivas. Their presence underscored the administrative and spiritual readiness of the temple complex to receive the influx of devotees.

Festival Schedule and Important Dates

This opening follows the conclusion of the Mandala festival, after which the temple had closed on December 27. The current phase is dedicated to the Makaravilakku festival, the pinnacle of the Sabarimala pilgrimage season.

The main Makaravilakku event is scheduled for January 14. The temple will remain open for devotees, who can have darshan until 11 PM on January 19. The final closure for this season will take place at 6:30 AM on January 20, concluding the extended pilgrimage period.

Authorities have made extensive arrangements to manage the expected large crowds and ensure a smooth and spiritually fulfilling experience for all Ayyappa devotees during this sacred time.
