SASTRA Deemed University successfully conducted its yearly Thiruppavai and Thiruvembavai recitation contest this past Sunday, engaging school students from across the region. The event was held simultaneously at two venues: the university's main campus in Thanjavur and the Srinivasa Ramanujan Centre in Kumbakonam.
Cultivating Values Through Devotional Poetry
The primary goal of the competition was to instill strong ethical principles, a spiritual perspective, and to uncover hidden talents among the young participants. This initiative reflects SASTRA University's ongoing commitment to promoting Tamil devotional literature and preserving cultural heritage, especially during the auspicious Margazhi season.
Enthusiastic Participation at Thanjavur Campus
At the main campus in Thanjavur, the event witnessed vibrant energy with participation from more than 20 schools from Thanjavur and its neighboring areas. The occasion was graced by special guests who are esteemed figures in Tamil tradition.
Raman Balaji Bhattachariyar from Srirangam and Sivasri Sivanesan Othuvar from Thanjavur addressed the gathering. They inspired the students by urging them to emulate the exemplary devotion of saint-poets Andal and Manikkavachakar. These dignitaries also served as judges for the contest and had the honor of distributing prizes to the winners.
Kumbakonam Centre Sees Robust Involvement
Parallelly, the Srinivasa Ramanujan Centre in Kumbakonam hosted its own edition of the competition with equal fervor. A total of 17 schools participated in the recitals at this venue. Madhavan Othuvar attended as the special guest and judge, overseeing the proceedings and evaluating the performances of the participants.
