Shirgao Jatra 2024: Sacred Fire-Walking Ritual Set to Commence with Enhanced Safety
The annual Shirgao Jatra at the revered Shree Devi Lairai Temple in Bicholim, Goa, is poised to begin on Tuesday, marking the culmination of a sacred fast observed by dedicated devotees known as 'dhonds'. These special followers of the goddess, hailing not only from Goa but also from neighboring states like Maharashtra and Karnataka, initiated their rigorous fast on Friday, preparing spiritually for the intense rituals ahead.
Homkund: The Prime Attraction with Fire-Walking Spectacle
According to Dinanath Gaonkar, President of the Lairai Temple, the prime attraction of the festival is the 'homkund' ritual. In this awe-inspiring ceremony, dhonds walk barefoot over a carpet of burning coal, chanting 'Har Har Mahadev' as a testament to their devotion. This act symbolizes purification and faith, drawing thousands of spectators annually.
Post-Stampede Safety Measures and Devotional Routine
In response to last year's unfortunate stampede, temple authorities organized a special meeting with the dhonds to brief them on their roles and ensure crowd management during the jatra. Gaonkar emphasized that during the jatrotsav, dhonds adhere to a pious routine: they take a holy dip before consuming their breakfast and dinner, maintaining ritual purity throughout the festival.
On the main festival day, after performing all essential rituals including the 'garhane', all dhonds take a ceremonial dip in the temple pond, known as 'Devichi Tali'. Following this, the homkund is lit, and the dhonds dance around it fervently until dawn. Once the fire reduces to a bed of hot coal, they proceed to walk across it, showcasing their unwavering devotion.
Kaulotsav: Four-Day Extension of Celebrations
The jatra extends for another four days, transitioning into the 'Kaulotsav'. During this phase, a kalash representing the goddess is carried to every household in the village, blessing each home. The goddess ceremoniously returns to the temple on the fifth day, concluding the festivities. While the first day attracts devotees eager to witness the homkund, the subsequent days of Kaulotsav draw visitors from across the state to Shirgao, fostering a sense of community and spiritual unity.
This year's event is expected to see heightened participation, with enhanced safety protocols in place to ensure a peaceful and devotional experience for all attendees. The Shirgao Jatra continues to be a significant cultural and religious event, deeply rooted in Goan traditions and attracting widespread reverence.
