Special Lecture on Kuvempu's 120th Birth Anniversary

The Karnataka government, through its Department of Kannada and Culture, is set to honor one of the state's most revered literary figures. A special commemorative lecture will be held to mark the 120th birth anniversary of the legendary poet and Jnanpith awardee, Kuvempu.

Event Details and Distinguished Speaker

The significant event is scheduled for Tuesday, December 29. It will take place at the prestigious Kuvempu Ranga Mandira, located within the premises of the Ravindra Kalakshetra in Bengaluru. The lecture will commence at 11 am.

Adding to the importance of the occasion, the lecture will be delivered by a distinguished scholar. Dr. B.R. Jayaram Mohite, the former Head of the Department of Studies in English at Karnatak University in Dharwad, has been chosen as the keynote speaker. His insights are expected to shed new light on Kuvempu's vast contributions to literature and thought.

Celebrating the Life and Work of a Literary Giant

Kuppalli Venkatappa Puttappa, universally known by his pen name Kuvempu, was born on December 29, 1904. He is celebrated not just as a poet, but as a novelist, playwright, critic, and thinker who reshaped Kannada literature. His epic work, "Sri Ramayana Darshanam," a modern rendition of the Ramayana, earned him the prestigious Jnanpith Award in 1967.

Kuvempu's philosophy of "Vishwamanava Sandesha" (Universal Humanism) transcended regional and national boundaries, advocating for the unity of all humankind. His call for "Sarvarigella olitugaliru" (let all people prosper) remains deeply relevant. For his immense service to the state, he was honored with the Karnataka Ratna award in 1992, the highest civilian honor of the state. Furthermore, the state's highest literary award is named the Kuvempu Bhasha Bharathi Prashasti in his memory.

A Legacy Etched in State Celebrations

The poet's connection with Karnataka's identity runs deep. His profound poem, "Jaya Bharata Jananiya Tanujate", was officially declared the state anthem of Karnataka. The government organizes this annual lecture as a fitting tribute to keep his ideals alive for future generations.

This year's event coincides with the recent Rajyotsava Awards, where individuals from various fields were recognized for their service to the state. Honoring Kuvempu in this manner reinforces the government's commitment to preserving and promoting the rich cultural and literary heritage of Karnataka. The lecture serves as an annual reminder of the visionary ideas of a man whose work continues to inspire millions.
