Sri Marikamba Jathra 2026: Festival Starts Feb 3 in Sagar

The historic Sri Marikamba Jathra, a revered festival held once every three years in Sagar town of Shivamogga district, is set to commence on February 3, 2026, and continue until February 11. This grand celebration, deeply rooted in the cultural fabric of the Malnad region, traces its origins back to the 16th century when it was established by Keladi ruler Venkatappa Nayaka. As Goddess Marikamba served as the presiding deity of the Keladi dynasty, the festival holds immense spiritual and historical significance, attracting devotees from across Karnataka and beyond.

Traffic Management and Parking Regulations

In anticipation of a daily influx of over 80,000 devotees, Shivamogga Deputy Commissioner Prabhulinga Kavalikatti has issued an official notification outlining comprehensive traffic diversions and parking regulations to ensure safety and smooth conduct. Vehicle movement has been completely banned on key stretches, including JC Circle to Saitappa Circle via JC Road, Ambedkar Circle to Sagara Circle, and Satyanarayana Swamy Temple Circle to Sagara Circle. Additionally, heavy goods vehicles will not be permitted to enter the town between 10 am and midnight throughout the nine-day festival to prioritize pedestrian safety.

Parking restrictions have also been implemented on Soraba Road, Market Road, and the lanes around the government hospital to facilitate unobstructed movement of ambulances and emergency services. To accommodate visitors, temporary parking arrangements for two-wheelers and four-wheelers have been established along NH-69, spanning from Varadahalli Cross to Hampayyana Kola, providing convenient options for those traveling to the event.

Enhanced Connectivity for Devotees

In a significant boost to festival commuters, the Railway Ministry has approved the temporary extension of the Yeshwantpur–Shivamogga night train (Train No. 16581/16582) up to Talaguppa for the duration of the Jathra. This extension, facilitated by Union Minister of State for Railways V Somanna following a request from Shivamogga MP BY Raghavendra, aims to improve connectivity for devotees traveling from Bengaluru and other regions, ensuring easier access to the festivities.

Festival Highlights and Cultural Significance

The Sri Marikamba Jathra is not just a religious gathering but a vibrant showcase of tradition and community spirit. Attendees can look forward to witnessing the grand Mangalya Puja, state-level wrestling competitions, and a variety of traditional cultural performances that highlight the rich heritage of the area. These events, combined with the spiritual ambiance, make the festival a must-visit for those interested in Karnataka's cultural legacy.

Overall, these meticulous arrangements by local authorities and the support from railway officials are designed to ensure a safe, seamless, and enriching experience for all participants. As the festival unfolds, it promises to be a memorable celebration of faith, culture, and community in the heart of Shivamogga.
