In a quiet, nondescript village in Uttar Pradesh's Mainpuri district, profound grief has transformed into fervent religious devotion. A baby girl, declared stillborn by medical professionals and diagnosed with a fatal congenital condition, has been proclaimed by her family as an incarnation of Goddess Kali. This extraordinary development has captivated the local community and drawn visitors from surrounding areas.
From Tragedy to Religious Phenomenon
The infant was embalmed and buried on February 2nd. Shortly thereafter, the burial site underwent a remarkable transformation. Villagers decorated the location, installed a photograph of the "goddess", and began conducting regular bhajans, kirtans, and havans. Reports indicate that thousands of rupees have been offered at the site, and preparations are actively underway to construct a permanent temple there.
The Birth and Divine Foretelling
Radha Devi, 25, wife of laborer Kanchan Kumar from Halpura village, delivered the baby at the community health centre in Kuchela on January 21st. The family shared a compelling narrative that preceded the birth. They claimed that Radha had experienced a dream in which a goddess told her, "I am taking birth from your womb." Interpreting this as a divine sign, they communicated the account to neighbors, and the story rapidly spread across surrounding regions.
Medical Explanation Versus Spiritual Belief
Dr. SS Bhadoria, in-charge of the community health centre, confirmed the medical facts: "The woman delivered a stillborn baby girl and the body was handed over to the family." Medical experts identified the condition as anencephaly—a severe and fatal congenital disorder where major portions of the brain and skull fail to develop properly.
Paediatrician Dr. Hemant Kumar Sharma elaborated on Wednesday: "The condition develops in the early weeks of pregnancy and may be linked to several factors, including maternal weakness or deficiencies such as Vitamin B12 or folic acid."
Despite this clear medical explanation, strong spiritual beliefs took root in the village. Geeta Devi, a neighbor, made an astonishing claim: "After the baby was brought home, she drank milk and urinated before being dressed as goddess Kali and seated for worship."
Another neighbor, Aman, expressed similar convictions: "The child appeared divine and that she had asked for a place of worship." Many visitors noted the baby's large eyes, which they believed reinforced her divine manifestation.
Growing Pilgrimage and Historical Parallel
The site has attracted residents from nearby villages as well as towns including Etawah, Firozabad, and Shikohabad. This phenomenon echoes a similar episode from 2017 in Farrukhabad district, where a baby born with severe congenital deformities was declared stillborn at Lohia Government Hospital and diagnosed with anencephaly. At that time, some residents attributed religious significance to the incident and expressed intentions to build a temple in remembrance.
