In a powerful endorsement of grassroots theatre, senior theatre personality Mime Ramesh declared street plays as one of the most effective mediums to propagate the ideology of national leader Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. The statement was made on Saturday in Mysuru, where he inaugurated a series of street plays dedicated to promoting Ambedkar's social thoughts.
Street Theatre: A Catalyst for Social Awareness
Speaking at the event organized by Rangayana Mysuru, Mime Ramesh emphasized the unique potency of street plays. He asserted that this accessible art form is not just for spreading Ambedkar's philosophy but is also a powerful instrument to bring about tangible social changes and raise public consciousness on a multitude of issues. The plays are being staged in front of the iconic Dufferin Clock Tower, locally known as Chikka Gadiyara, as a special feature of the silver jubilee celebrations of the Bahuroopi National Theatre Festival.
Concerns Over Social Media and a Call to Action
The occasion also heard from Mythri, an environmental engineer with the Mysuru City Corporation (MCC), who voiced a pressing concern regarding modern youth. She highlighted the excessive use of social media among students and young people, linking it directly to a decline in academic focus and a rise in mental and physical health problems.
"This is leading to a decline in studies and a rise in mental and health issues," Mythri stated. She made a compelling appeal, urging the youth to step away from their screens and engage with live theatre. "Youth and students must watch street plays, understand the messages, and adopt the thoughts and themes in their lives," she advised, positioning street theatre as a vital, real-world alternative to digital consumption.
Celebrating Legacy Through Performance
The event saw the participation of other notable figures from the cultural sphere. Satish Tiptur, the director of Rangayana Mysuru, also addressed the gathering, underscoring the institution's commitment to using theatre as a force for social education and reflection. The inauguration of these plays marks a significant effort to keep Dr. Ambedkar's revolutionary thoughts alive and relevant for contemporary audiences, using the direct and impactful language of street performance.
By taking the performances to the historic Chikka Gadiyara, the organizers ensure they reach the common public in an everyday setting, perfectly aligning with the democratic and accessible spirit of Ambedkar's own mission. This initiative blends cultural celebration with social messaging, aiming to inspire both thought and action among its viewers.
