Kolkata's Iconic Victoria Memorial Hall Set for Illumination Transformation

The Victoria Memorial Hall in Kolkata, one of the city's first heritage buildings to be illuminated, is poised for a significant lighting makeover. A lighting designer is currently working on implementing dynamic illumination that will accentuate various architectural details of this magnificent marble structure, widely regarded as a masterpiece of Indo-Saracenic revivalist architecture.

From Flat Floodlights to Dynamic Highlighting

Anurag Kumar, who recently retired from his position as curator at Victoria Memorial Hall, explained that while the existing lighting system installed by the National Buildings Construction Corporation approximately 15 years ago made the building sparkle like a jewel in the Maidan at night, it had limitations. "The architectural details got washed over by the flat, high-wattage floodlights trained on this Raj-era monument," Kumar noted.

"We received a proposal to completely refresh the lighting to properly accentuate the architectural features," Kumar continued. "Kolkata Restorers, who successfully illuminated the angel atop the Victoria Memorial dome last year, have offered to work on the southern facade initially. If this new illumination proves successful, we plan to similarly light up the eastern, northern, and western facades."

Technical Challenges and Innovative Solutions

Lighting designer Suyash Narsaria detailed his approach to this prestigious project. "I intend to use a sophisticated mix of narrow beam, wide-angle, and flexible ambient light to properly illuminate the southern facade," Narsaria explained. "The challenge of working on such an important heritage structure is manifold."

Narsaria described the complex installation process: "We need to use scaffolding in some areas to properly fix the lights. For locations below the terrace, technicians must descend one level using harnesses to set up the lighting equipment. Additionally, since we cannot drill or screw anything into the historic structure, we will employ a special adhesive to securely fix the lights in place."

Dynamic Lighting System with Changing Highlights

The new lighting system will feature dimmable and controllable lights that create dynamic visual effects. For specific durations, certain architectural features will be highlighted more prominently than others. Subsequently, these highlighted elements will become muted while other features receive emphasis, creating a changing visual narrative of the building's architecture throughout the evening.

"Approximately 80% of the lights have already been installed," Narsaria reported. "The remaining installation should take about one week to complete. We anticipate the entire lighting project will be finished by mid-March."

Corporate Funding for Heritage Preservation

The illumination project is being funded by Techno Electric & Engineering Co Ltd (TEECL), which recently supported the restoration of Kolkata's New Market clock tower. TEECL director Avantika Gupta expressed enthusiasm about the company's involvement: "We are delighted to participate in illuminating Kolkata's most beloved historical monument. Preserving and enhancing our cultural heritage is important for both current and future generations."

This lighting transformation represents the latest effort to enhance the visual appeal of one of India's most iconic heritage structures while respecting its architectural integrity and historical significance.
