Yaanam 2025: Kerala's Seaside Town Varkala Invites Storytellers to Set Sail on Cultural Voyage
Yaanam 2025: Varkala Calls for Maritime Stories

The picturesque coastal town of Varkala in Kerala is preparing to host its unique storytelling festival, Yaanam, in January 2025, with organizers now calling for compelling maritime narratives from aspiring storytellers.

Celebrating Kerala's Maritime Legacy

Scheduled for January 10-12, 2025, Yaanam 2025 continues its tradition of exploring stories connected to the sea, drawing inspiration from Varkala's stunning cliffside location overlooking the Arabian Sea. The festival's theme, "From the Seaside," aims to dive deep into the ocean's cultural significance and Kerala's rich maritime heritage.

Call for Diverse Maritime Stories

Organizers are seeking submissions across multiple categories that capture the essence of coastal life and seafaring traditions:

  • Personal narratives of coastal communities and fishing traditions
  • Historical accounts of Kerala's maritime trade and cultural exchanges
  • Ecological stories about marine conservation and coastal ecosystems
  • Mythological tales rooted in sea folklore and ancient sailing traditions
  • Contemporary accounts of modern seafaring and coastal development

Submission Guidelines and Festival Experience

Storytellers can submit their proposals until August 31, 2024, through the official Yaanam website. Selected participants will have the opportunity to present their stories during the three-day festival against the breathtaking backdrop of Varkala's famous cliffs and beaches.

The festival promises an immersive experience combining traditional storytelling with contemporary narrative forms, including:

  1. Live storytelling sessions at sunset
  2. Interactive workshops with master storytellers
  3. Cultural performances inspired by maritime themes
  4. Community dialogues about coastal preservation

Building on Past Success

Yaanam has established itself as a significant platform for reviving and celebrating India's oral storytelling traditions while adapting them for modern audiences. The 2025 edition aims to build on previous successes by creating deeper connections between land and sea through narrative art forms.

"The sea has always been a gateway to new worlds and stories," says festival curator Anwar Ali. "Through Yaanam 2025, we want to explore how maritime narratives continue to shape our cultural identity and connect us across oceans."

The festival represents Kerala's ongoing commitment to preserving and promoting its unique cultural heritage while fostering creative expression among local and international storytellers.
