The Indian luxury car market witnessed a spectacular debut for the latest open-top offering from the British marque. The newly launched Mini Cooper Convertible, brought to the country by BMW AG, saw its initial allocation completely sold out within a mere 24 hours of its launch on December 12. This overwhelming consumer response has prompted the brand to immediately open bookings for the next batch of vehicles.
Unprecedented Demand for an Affordable Drop-Top
Priced at ₹58.50 lakh (ex-showroom), the Mini Cooper Convertible entered the market with a significant advantage: the title of India's most affordable convertible car. This strategic pricing clearly struck a chord with buyers, leading to the rapid sell-out. For perspective, its closest rival in the segment, the MG Cyberster electric convertible, carries a price tag of around ₹75 lakh (ex-showroom), placing the Mini at a considerable price advantage. The car is offered as a Completely Built-up Unit (CBU) and comes with a standard two-year unlimited kilometre warranty and 24x7 roadside assistance.
What Makes the Mini Cooper Convertible Special?
The frenzy around this car isn't just about price. It combines classic Mini charm with modern features and performance. The exterior retains the iconic Mini silhouette but gets contemporary updates like redesigned circular LED headlamps, a new grille, and distinctive 18-inch dual-tone alloy wheels. Buyers can choose from four vibrant exterior shades: British Racing Green, Chili Red, Sunny Side Yellow, and Ocean Wave Green, complemented by Black or White mirror caps.
The party piece is, of course, the electrically operated fabric roof. It can be opened in 18 seconds and closed in 15 seconds, even while driving at speeds up to 30 kmph. A unique feature allows it to be partially opened as a makeshift sunroof. Boot space is 215 litres with the roof up and 160 litres when folded down.
Feature-Packed Cabin and Lively Performance
Inside, the cabin is loaded with technology. It features a round OLED touchscreen infotainment system running on BMW OS 9, a head-up display, a premium Harman Kardon audio system, wireless charging, and electric sports seats with Vescin upholstery.
Under the bonnet, a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine delivers a spirited 201 bhp and 300 Nm of torque, paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. This enables the convertible to accelerate from 0-100 kmph in just 6.9 seconds and reach a top speed of 240 kmph.
With the first batch already gone, Mini India has opened bookings for the next batch, which is scheduled to arrive early next year. The instant success of the Mini Cooper Convertible underscores a growing appetite for fun, premium, and accessible convertible cars in the Indian automotive landscape.
