UP Leads India's Most-Visited States for Domestic Tourists

India's domestic tourism landscape witnessed a significant surge in the 2024-25 period, with northern giant Uttar Pradesh solidifying its position as the nation's undisputed favourite destination for holidaymakers travelling within the country. The state recorded a staggering 646.8 million domestic tourist visits, according to data published on 3 December 2025.

The Top 10 Powerhouses of Indian Domestic Tourism

The list of the most-visited states reveals a fascinating mix of cultural, spiritual, and natural hotspots that continue to draw Indian travellers in massive numbers. Following Uttar Pradesh, the southern states showcased their immense appeal. Tamil Nadu secured the second spot with 306.8 million visits, closely trailed by Karnataka at 304.6 million. Andhra Pradesh completed a strong southern presence in the top four, welcoming 290.3 million domestic tourists.

The rankings highlight the diverse preferences of Indian travellers. The royal deserts and forts of Rajasthan attracted 230.1 million visitors, claiming the fifth position. Western India was represented by Gujarat and Maharashtra, with 184 million and 189.4 million visits respectively. West Bengal, with its unique cultural heritage, recorded 184.5 million visits, while the heartland state of Madhya Pradesh registered 133 million tourist arrivals.

Regional Highlights and Tourism Trends

While the larger states dominated in sheer volume, the data also underscores the enduring charm of India's scenic regions. Himachal Pradesh, a perennial favourite for hill station getaways, recorded 18 million visits. The figures collectively point to a robust recovery and growth in domestic travel post-pandemic, with citizens exploring their own country's vast offerings.

The dominance of Uttar Pradesh can be attributed to its unparalleled array of religious and heritage sites. Cities like Varanasi, Ayodhya, and Agra (home to the Taj Mahal) act as powerful magnets for pilgrims and cultural tourists alike. Similarly, the strong showing of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka reflects the well-established temple circuits, coastal beauty, and urban attractions of cities like Chennai, Bengaluru, and Mysuru.

This data, released in late 2025, provides crucial insights for state tourism boards and the hospitality industry. It underscores the economic importance of catering to the domestic traveller, who forms the backbone of India's tourism sector. The trends suggest a continued preference for a blend of spiritual journeys, cultural immersion, and leisure travel within the country's borders.
