UP Tourism Hosts Food Heritage Walk in Lucknow

Lucknow: As part of efforts to promote the city's rich gastronomic heritage, the Uttar Pradesh tourism department organized a Food Heritage Walk through the historic Chowk area on Thursday to mark World Sustainable Gastronomy Day.

Event Highlights

Held under the state's 'Visit My State Uttar Pradesh' campaign, the walk drew nearly 40 participants, including tourists, food enthusiasts, heritage lovers, and social media influencers. They explored some of Lucknow's most iconic food landmarks while learning about the city's cultural and historical legacy.

The participants visited well-known establishments such as Raja Ki Thandai, Sevak Ram Mishtan Bhandar, Gol Darwaza, and Akbari Gate. There, they sampled traditional Awadhi flavors and heard stories associated with eateries that have preserved Lucknow's culinary traditions for generations.

Government's Vision

Tourism and Culture Minister Jaiveer Singh said the state government is working to integrate cuisine, culture, and heritage into the tourism experience. "Lucknow's recognition as a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy reflects its rich culinary legacy. Through initiatives like the Food Heritage Walk, we aim to promote sustainable gastronomy while celebrating local cuisine and traditional food communities," he said.

Beyond food, the walk offered participants a glimpse into Lucknow's layered history. According to heritage guide Sheshank, the group was introduced to stories of lesser-known freedom fighters and revolutionaries associated with the city. They also visited centuries-old temples in the Chowk area, some believed to be over a thousand years old.

Immersive Experiences

Additional Chief Secretary of Tourism, Culture, and Religious Affairs, Amrit Abhijat, said food serves as one of the most effective ways to experience a destination's culture and identity. He noted that the Visit My State campaign seeks to create immersive tourism experiences that connect visitors with local traditions, communities, and heritage.

Participants described the event as a unique blend of food, history, and culture. "The Food Heritage Walk offered a memorable experience and helped us understand a different side of Lucknow," said participant Mohan Jain.

The initiative is part of UP tourism's broader efforts to position Lucknow as a leading gastronomic destination and encourage visitors to explore the state's diverse culinary and cultural traditions.
