Congress MP from Gurdaspur Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa met Union Home Minister Amit Shah at Kartavya Bhavan in Delhi on Friday, creating a buzz in political circles. The meeting occurred amid growing resentment in the Punjab Congress over the recent organisational reshuffle in the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC), where Amrinder Raja Warring was retained as PPCC chief and Partap Bajwa as CLP leader.
Disgruntled Leaders Gather at Channi's Residence
As Randhawa met Shah, disgruntled Punjab Congress leaders gathered at the residence of former Chief Minister Charanjit Channi to protest against Warring’s continuation as PPCC chief. Channi, who heads the Campaign Committee, is reportedly unhappy with the appointment.
Randhawa Denies Political Motives
Political observers speculated the meeting could be linked to the reported discontent within the state unit. However, Randhawa made it clear that the discussion was strictly confined to administrative and security issues. He strongly refuted attempts by certain media sections to give a political colour to the meeting. “It had nothing to do with politics. Any attempt to politicise a genuine concern regarding the safety and security of Punjabis is unfortunate,” he stated.
Focus on Law and Order
Randhawa said the pre-scheduled meeting focused on the deteriorating law and order situation in Punjab, particularly issues related to border security, extortion, and gangster threats. He emphasised the need for greater involvement of central agencies such as the Intelligence Bureau (IB), Military Intelligence (MI), Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to tackle the prevailing challenges.
