Reza Pahlavi, the exiled crown prince of Iran, spoke about India-Iran ties on Friday. He discussed future cooperation while addressing ongoing protests against Iran's clerical leadership.
Historical Bonds Between India and Iran
Pahlavi held a news conference where he emphasized the long-standing relationship between India and Iran. He said this relationship spans decades. The exiled prince recalled former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's visit to Iran during his youth.
"I remember those days," Pahlavi stated. He noted the connection between the two nations has always been cultural and historical.
Modern Relations and Democratic Hopes
Pahlavi asserted that the relationship remains strong in modern times. "In modern history, we have had a very, very good relationship," he explained. He further said a democratic Iran would naturally seek close ties with countries respecting sovereignty and liberty.
"A democratic Iran is committed to having the best possible relationship with countries that share the same values," Pahlavi added.
India as a Natural Partner for Cooperation
The exiled crown prince highlighted India's history and heritage. He said these make India a natural partner for deeper cooperation. "There is a rich history that I observe in India," Pahlavi remarked. He believes this could form the basis of a strong bond between the two countries.
Pahlavi also described India as a leader in technology and expertise. He specifically mentioned renewable energy and information technology. "India is one of the leading countries when it comes to tech and expertise," he said. The prince expressed hope that experts from both sides could work closely in the future.
A New Chapter After Freedom
Pahlavi said a new phase of ties could begin once Iran achieves freedom. "Hopefully, once we are freed, we can start a new chapter," he stated optimistically.
Background on Reza Pahlavi and Iran's Protests
Reza Pahlavi is the eldest son of Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, Iran's last shah. The shah was overthrown during the 1979 Islamic Revolution. Pahlavi has lived in exile since the monarchy fell. He has been a prominent voice calling for continued protests in Iran.
Iran has witnessed widespread anti-government protests for over two weeks. The protests began as demonstrations over economic distress. They have expanded into broader calls for political change. Protesters demand an end to the country's theocratic system.
Protests have spread across several cities despite heavy security deployment. Authorities have imposed internet restrictions and made mass arrests to quell the unrest.
