NEW DELHI: India and Cyprus elevated their bilateral relationship to a strategic partnership, unveiling a roadmap for defence collaboration and signing a memorandum of understanding to establish a joint working group on counterterrorism. This development occurred during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's meeting with visiting Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides.
Shared Values and Investment Gateway
Modi emphasized that ties with Cyprus, which currently holds the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union, are rooted in shared values such as democracy and the rule of law. He reiterated India's steadfast support for the unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of Cyprus, an eastern Mediterranean nation not recognized by Turkey. "We respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all nations. India is and will remain fully committed to these principles," Modi stated, describing Cyprus as a crucial investment gateway between India and Europe.
Boosting Bilateral Investment
Highlighting Cyprus as one of India's top ten investors, Modi expressed confidence that growing trust and the India-EU Free Trade Agreement would enable both countries to double this investment within the next five years. "This strategic partnership between India and Cyprus will unlock capital for commerce by connecting the financial and services hubs of both countries. It will provide new opportunities for Indian companies in Cyprus' infrastructure, energy, and agriculture sectors, and will also bring new investment to India's rapidly growing shipping and maritime sectors," the Prime Minister said.
Defence and Security Cooperation
The leaders discussed the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) initiative, defence, and security cooperation. Modi called defence a vital pillar of the relationship, noting that military exchanges and training cooperation have increased in recent years. "Today we also decided to further strengthen cooperation in cybersecurity, maritime security, and counter-terrorism," he added. The two sides also agreed to establish a cybersecurity dialogue.
Migration and Mobility Partnership
Given the significant number of Indian students and professionals residing in Cyprus, both sides agreed to finalize a comprehensive migration and mobility partnership, along with a social security agreement, in the near future.
Regional and Global Issues
In his media statement, Modi raised the conflicts in Ukraine and West Asia, affirming that both countries would continue to support peace efforts and an early resolution. The leaders emphasized the urgent need for reforming global institutions to address growing challenges. President Christodoulides reiterated Cyprus' support for India's permanent membership in a reformed United Nations Security Council.
Counterterrorism Stance
Both leaders expressed zero tolerance for terrorism, rejecting double standards, state-sponsored terrorism, and any justification for such acts under any circumstances. They condemned cross-border terrorism and the Pahalgam terrorist attack. "Cyprus expressed solidarity and unwavering support to India in its fight against cross-border terrorism," the joint statement read.
IMEEC and Connectivity
The leaders recognized the transformative potential of the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor in reshaping global trade, connectivity, and prosperity. They reiterated their commitment to promoting stability in the Eastern Mediterranean and the wider Middle East, emphasizing deeper engagement and corridors linking India to Europe via the Middle East. They also discussed establishing a Bilateral Connectivity Dialogue.
