India to Construct Strategic Railway Network Along Pakistan Border in Rajasthan

In a major strategic infrastructure initiative, the Ministry of Railways has announced plans to develop new railway lines parallel to the international border with Pakistan in a phased manner. This significant move aims to strengthen India's defense capabilities while simultaneously improving connectivity in remote border regions of Rajasthan.

Strategic Railway Routes Under Final Location Surveys

Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw informed the Lok Sabha on Tuesday that Final Location Surveys (FLS) are currently progressing for crucial proposed railway routes in Rajasthan's border areas. The key routes under consideration include the Anupgarh–Khajuwala–Jaisalmer line and the Jaisalmer–Barmer–Bhiladi route (via Barmer).

Vaishnaw emphasized that these railway lines are being strategically planned parallel to the India-Pakistan border, which will provide substantial strategic advantages while significantly enhancing connectivity in border regions. The projects are expected to facilitate faster troop movement and improve logistical supply chains for the Indian armed forces.

Comprehensive Border Connectivity Network

The proposed rail network will connect several critical border regions, creating an integrated transportation corridor. Key locations to be connected include:

  • Anupgarh
  • Bikaner
  • Khajuwala
  • Phalodi
  • Jaisalmer
  • Barmer
  • Bhiladi

The network will extend up to Bhabhar in Gujarat, creating a comprehensive border connectivity system. Notably, the Jaisalmer–Bhabhar/Bhiladi route is planned to span approximately 380 kilometers, while the Khajuwala–Jaisalmer line is expected to cover around 260 kilometers.

Dual Benefits: Defense and Development

Beyond the clear defense advantages, the railway expansion is projected to drive significant socio-economic development in remote border areas. Regions such as Jaisalmer and Barmer are expected to witness substantial growth in multiple sectors once the projects are completed:

  1. Tourism enhancement in historically significant border regions
  2. Trade facilitation through improved transportation infrastructure
  3. Employment generation during construction and operational phases
  4. Economic integration of remote frontier areas with mainstream markets

Implementation Timeline and Priority Status

The Railway Minister confirmed that the Final Location Survey work is progressing steadily, with subsequent construction phases scheduled to commence after survey completion. Vaishnaw emphasized that such infrastructure projects in border areas are receiving high priority from Indian Railways, reflecting the government's commitment to strengthening both national security and regional development.

Highlighting the broader strategic vision, Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that this initiative will ensure seamless military mobility along the border while simultaneously strengthening national security through the integration of remote frontier areas via a robust railway network. The projects represent a comprehensive approach to border infrastructure development that balances defense requirements with civilian connectivity needs.
