Iran has officially declared that it will only enter into negotiations with the United States once two critical conditions are met: a ceasefire is established in Lebanon and Tehran's frozen assets are released. This announcement was made by the country's parliament speaker, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, who emphasized that these steps were previously agreed upon but have not been implemented.
Unfulfilled Agreements Block Diplomatic Progress
Ghalibaf stated that the two measures—a ceasefire in Lebanon and the release of Iran's blocked assets—must be fulfilled before any talks can proceed. In a post on X, he wrote, "Two of the measures mutually agreed upon between the parties have yet to be implemented: a ceasefire in Lebanon and the release of Iran's blocked assets prior to the commencement of negotiations. These two matters must be fulfilled before negotiations begin." This stance underscores Iran's firm position amid ongoing regional tensions.
Historical Distrust and Additional Grievances
Tehran has previously accused the United States of violating three clauses of Iran's 10-point proposal even before negotiations could start. These include:
- The Lebanon ceasefire
- An intruding drone downed over Fars Province
- The denial of uranium enrichment rights
Ghalibaf described these issues as part of a "deep historical distrust" pattern, arguing that further ceasefire efforts are unreasonable until they are addressed. Iran's nuclear chief, Mohammad Eslami, has echoed this sentiment, insisting that enrichment rights are essential despite US opposition.
