India's External Affairs Minister, Dr. S Jaishankar, will travel to Dhaka to pay India's respects at the funeral of Begum Khaleda Zia, the former Prime Minister of Bangladesh. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed his visit on Tuesday, stating he will represent the government and people of India at the solemn occasion on 31 December 2025.
India's Tribute and PM Modi's Condolences
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow over the passing of the first woman premier of Bangladesh. In his message, PM Modi highlighted Khaleda Zia's significant contributions to her country's development and to the strengthening of India-Bangladesh relations. He fondly remembered a "warm meeting" with her in Dhaka back in 2015 and expressed hope that her vision would continue to guide the partnership between the two neighbouring nations.
The Legacy of Begum Khaleda Zia
Khaleda Zia, who also served as the chairperson of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), passed away on Tuesday at the age of 80. Her political career, spanning decades, was instrumental in restoring democracy in Bangladesh following a phase of military rule. Her tenure and opposition were defined by a prolonged and fierce rivalry with current political figure Sheikh Hasina.
Her later years were marked by legal challenges, including corruption charges from which she was later cleared. She was allowed to travel to London for medical treatment only after Sheikh Hasina's government exited office. Notably, before her death, she was preparing to contest the upcoming February parliamentary elections, which mark Bangladesh's first polls since the 2024 popular uprising.
Significance of the Diplomatic Visit
Dr. Jaishankar's visit to Dhaka underscores the importance India places on its bilateral relationship with Bangladesh. Attending the funeral of a major political figure is a gesture of deep diplomatic respect and solidarity. This move reinforces India's commitment to engaging with all facets of Bangladesh's political landscape and honouring a leader who played a pivotal role in the nation's history.
