Modified UDAN Scheme to Boost Regional Air Connectivity in Andhra Pradesh
In a significant move to enhance air travel infrastructure, the Union Cabinet has recently cleared the modified UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Naagrik) scheme, which is set to benefit domestic airports in Kurnool and Kadapa, Andhra Pradesh. This initiative aims to revolutionize regional connectivity across India, with a focus on underserved and remote areas.
Expansion of Airports and Heliports Nationwide
According to Vijayawada airport director M Lakshmi Kantha Reddy, the revamped scheme will lead to the development of 100 new airports and 200 heliports over the next decade. These facilities will be strategically located in hilly states, Union territories, islands, the northeastern region, and aspirational districts, ensuring that air travel becomes more accessible to a broader population.
Reddy emphasized that the primary objective of the modified UDAN scheme is to strengthen regional connectivity, promote inclusive growth, and make air travel affordable nationwide. By expanding infrastructure, the scheme seeks to create economic opportunities in remote areas and foster balanced growth within the aviation sector.
Key Features and Support Mechanisms
To ensure the sustainability of these new aerodromes, the scheme provides comprehensive operations and maintenance support for three years. Additionally, a state-supported legislative framework has been established to encourage active participation from local governments and stakeholders.
Connectivity to tier-2 and tier-3 cities will be significantly enhanced, with affordable fares even on larger aircraft, making air travel more viable for residents in smaller urban centers. The viability gap funding has been extended from three years to five, offering longer-term financial stability for new routes and services.
Furthermore, support for aircraft procurement under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative will boost domestic aviation manufacturing, aligning with national self-reliance goals and stimulating the local economy.
Impact on Regional Development
The modified UDAN scheme is expected to transform air travel in India by not only improving connectivity but also driving economic development in previously isolated regions. With a focus on airports, heliports, and water aerodromes, this initiative promises to bridge the gap between urban and rural areas, ensuring that the benefits of aviation reach every corner of the country.
As the scheme rolls out, stakeholders anticipate a surge in tourism, business opportunities, and overall mobility, contributing to a more integrated and prosperous national landscape.
