Prime Minister Narendra Modi has publicly voiced his apprehension regarding emerging reports about an alleged attack targeting the official residence of Russian President Vladimir Putin. In a significant statement, the Indian leader emphasized the critical need for restraint and a renewed commitment to diplomatic channels to resolve the ongoing conflict.
Modi's Call for Diplomatic Focus
Taking to the social media platform X on Tuesday, Prime Minister Modi stated he was 'deeply concerned' by the reports of the targeting of the Russian President's home. He underscored that sustained diplomatic engagement represents the most practical route to cease hostilities and secure peace. "We urge all concerned to remain focused on these efforts and to avoid any actions that could undermine them," PM Modi's post read, highlighting India's consistent stance on dialogue and de-escalation.
The Conflicting Claims from Russia and Ukraine
The development follows serious allegations made by Russian authorities. Russia claimed that Ukraine launched a drone attack on President Putin's state residence, situated between Moscow and St. Petersburg. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov alleged that on December 28–29, a total of 91 long-range drones were fired at the residence in the Novgorod region. Lavrov asserted that all the drones were intercepted and destroyed by Russian air defence systems.
Lavrov labelled the incident a 'terrorist attack' and declared that Moscow would consequently revise its negotiating stance concerning ending the war in Ukraine. He further warned that Russia had already identified targets within Ukraine for what he termed 'retaliation strikes.'
Ukraine's Firm Rejection and Counter-Allegations
Ukraine has categorically denied any involvement in the alleged incident. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy dismissed Russia's claims as 'lies,' accusing Moscow of fabricating the narrative to justify further military assaults on Ukrainian cities, including the capital Kyiv.
"This alleged 'residence strike' story is a complete fabrication intended to justify additional attacks against Ukraine, as well as Russia's refusal to take necessary steps to end the war," President Zelenskyy stated. He added that Ukraine does not engage in actions that sabotage diplomatic processes, instead accusing Russia of consistently undermining peace efforts. Zelenskyy urged the international community to not remain silent as the pursuit for a lasting peace continues.
The exchange of accusations marks a fresh escalation in rhetoric amid the prolonged conflict, with global leaders like PM Modi highlighting the ever-pressing need for a diplomatic resolution.
