New Mangalore Port Authority Concludes Merchant Navy Week with 63rd National Maritime Day Celebrations
The New Mangalore Port Authority (NMPA) successfully wrapped up the Merchant Navy Week with the observance of the 63rd National Maritime Day on Sunday. This significant event served to commemorate India's profound maritime heritage while paying tribute to the essential contributions made by seafarers and various maritime stakeholders across the nation.
Wreath-Laying Ceremony Honors Fallen Seafarers
To inaugurate the day's proceedings, a solemn wreath-laying ceremony was conducted at the Seafarers' Memorial located within the NMPA premises. S Shanthi, the deputy chairperson of NMPA, led the ceremony by laying a wreath and offering heartfelt homage to those seafarers who sacrificed their lives while performing their duties. The event saw the participation of senior officers, dedicated employees, port users, and key stakeholders, all of whom gathered to honor the bravery and dedication of these maritime professionals.
Valedictory Function Emphasizes Collaboration and Economic Impact
Following the memorial service, a valedictory function was held at the JNC Hall in Panambur, under the auspices of the NMPA. The function was presided over by S Shanthi and Mohan Alva, chairman of the Alva's Education Foundation. During his address, Dr. Alva underscored the critical role that seafarers and maritime stakeholders play in bolstering India's economic framework, highlighting their contributions to trade and national development.
Deputy Chairperson Shanthi expressed her appreciation for the active involvement of port users, stakeholders, and employees throughout the Merchant Navy Week. She stressed the importance of continued collaboration among all maritime entities to further strengthen and advance India's maritime sector, ensuring its growth and sustainability in the global arena.
Week-Long Celebrations Feature Diverse Activities
The Merchant Navy Week festivities commenced on March 28 with a friendly maritime cricket match, fostering camaraderie among participants. The following day, March 29, featured an engaging treasure hunt that added an element of excitement to the celebrations.
Environmental consciousness was promoted through a beach-cleaning drive at Panambur Beach, coupled with a spirited tug-of-war competition that encouraged teamwork and physical activity. On March 31, a blood donation camp was organized at Srinivas Port Hospital, where an impressive 123 donors participated, demonstrating community solidarity and support.
A maritime seminar focusing on Maritime Adversities and the Role of Stakeholders along with discussions on the Indian Port Act 2025 brought together industry experts and stakeholders to deliberate on current challenges and future strategies. Educational and recreational activities included essay and drawing competitions for students, as well as a throwball competition specifically for women employees, promoting inclusivity and skill development.
In a ceremonial gesture, the Merchant Navy flag or lapel was formally pinned on Dakshina Kannada MP Capt Brijesh Chowta, symbolizing recognition and honor. The week concluded with a maritime marathon that witnessed enthusiastic participation, encapsulating the spirit of endurance and celebration within the maritime community.
