PDP president Mehbooba Mufti on Wednesday reiterated her stance that lasting peace in Jammu and Kashmir can only be achieved through dialogue with Pakistan. Speaking at a press conference in Srinagar, she criticized the current government's approach, stating that military solutions have failed to bring stability to the region.
Dialogue as the Only Path
Mehbooba emphasized that the only way to resolve the decades-old conflict is through sustained and meaningful dialogue between India and Pakistan. She said, 'You cannot have peace in Jammu and Kashmir without engaging with Pakistan. The people of Kashmir have suffered enough, and it is time for a political solution.'
Criticism of the Government
She accused the central government of undermining the region's special status and suppressing the voices of the people. 'The abrogation of Article 370 was a unilateral decision that has only deepened the mistrust,' she added. Mehbooba called for the restoration of the state's autonomy and the initiation of a political process that includes all stakeholders.
Call for Truce
The former chief minister also appealed for a ceasefire along the Line of Control (LoC) to reduce tensions. 'Both sides must show restraint and work towards de-escalation. The people on both sides of the border want peace, not war,' she said.
Reactions and Implications
Mehbooba's remarks come at a time when relations between India and Pakistan remain strained. The central government has not yet responded to her statements. Political analysts believe that her call for dialogue reflects the sentiments of many in the region who are tired of the cycle of violence.
She concluded by urging the international community to play a constructive role in facilitating talks. 'The world must pressurize both countries to come to the table. The future of Kashmir depends on it,' she said.
