PM Modi receives Guard of Honour in Jakarta ahead of key bilateral talks

Prime Minister Narendra Modi received a formal ceremonial Guard of Honour in Jakarta on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, marking the commencement of his high-profile diplomatic engagements in Indonesia. The ceremony took place in the presence of Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, who personally led the reception. Demonstrating the close personal rapport between the two leaders, they shared a warm hug during the event.

Bilateral Talks and Comprehensive Strategic Partnership

Following the grand reception, Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to hold comprehensive bilateral discussions with President Prabowo. The visit, running from July 6 to 8 at the personal invitation of President Prabowo, marks Modi's fourth journey to Indonesia. Crucially, this is the inaugural bilateral visit since the two nations elevated their relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2018.

The high-level engagement aims to inject further momentum into this partnership, with defence and maritime coordination high on the agenda. Security relations between India and Indonesia have expanded significantly, driven by frequent high-level exchanges, joint military exercises, collaborative defence industry initiatives, and Indonesia's acquisition of BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles.

MAHASAGAR Vision and Regional Security

Underscoring the focus on maritime safety, the MAHASAGAR (Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security Across the Regions) framework serves as India's institutional vision for security and inclusive growth across the maritime domain. In his departure statement, PM Modi said, "My visit to Indonesia and Australia in the Eastern and Southern Indian Ocean, respectively, followed by New Zealand, will further strengthen India's Act East Policy, MAHASAGAR Vision, as well as our outlook towards a free and open Indo-Pacific."

Economic Ties and Critical Minerals

Indonesia is India's second-largest trading partner within ASEAN, with bilateral trade reaching USD 24.78 billion in the 2025-26 fiscal year. Over 130 Indian corporations maintain active investments in Indonesia. The strategic acquisition of critical minerals is also expected to feature prominently in discussions. Indonesia holds approximately 21% of global nickel reserves and is a major producer of bauxite, copper, and tin, making it vital for India's supply chain security and renewable energy targets.

Cultural and Diaspora Engagement

During his stay, PM Modi will engage with the Indian diaspora in Jakarta and accompany President Prabowo to the UNESCO-listed Prambanan Temple Complex in Yogyakarta, a symbol of civilisational links between the two nations. Members of the Indian diaspora expressed optimism that the visit would enhance collaboration in mining, infrastructure, energy, and emerging technology sectors.

Following his engagements in Indonesia, PM Modi will proceed to Australia and New Zealand as part of his multi-nation visit.
