Mumbai Rains Disrupt Local Rail Services, Trains Cancelled

Heavy Rains Paralyse Mumbai’s Local Train Network

Mumbai’s suburban railway network faced severe disruptions on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, as incessant heavy rains lashed the city. Several local trains on the Western Railway line were cancelled, while others ran with significant delays, causing immense hardship for commuters.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued a red alert for Mumbai and neighbouring districts, predicting very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall. The city received over 200 mm of rain in a span of 12 hours, leading to waterlogging on tracks and low-lying areas.

Western Railway Worst Hit

Western Railway officials confirmed that at least 12 trains were cancelled on the Churchgate-Virar section due to waterlogging between Borivali and Dahisar. Several long-distance trains were also delayed as a precautionary measure. A Western Railway spokesperson said, “Due to heavy waterlogging on tracks, we have cancelled some suburban services to ensure safety. Passengers are advised to check real-time updates.”

Central Railway also reported delays on the main line and harbour line, though the impact was less severe compared to Western Railway. According to railway authorities, around 30% of suburban services were affected across the network.

Commuters Face Hours-Long Delays

Thousands of commuters were stranded at stations like Andheri, Borivali, and Dadar, waiting for trains that either arrived late or were cancelled. Many office-goers opted to work from home, while others took alternate routes via buses or autorickshaws. However, road traffic was also snarled due to waterlogging on key roads such as the Western Express Highway and Sion-Panvel Highway.

One commuter, Rajesh Sharma, told India TV, “I have been waiting at Borivali station for over an hour. Most trains are either cancelled or running 30-40 minutes late. This is unbearable.”

BMC and NDRF on Alert

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) deployed pumps to clear water from rail tracks and roads. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) was kept on standby, though no major rescue operations were reported. The IMD has forecast more rain over the next 24 hours, raising concerns of further disruptions.

Authorities urged people to avoid unnecessary travel and stay indoors unless essential. The railway administration said it would issue refunds for cancelled tickets and is working to restore normal services as soon as possible.
