The ambitious Thane Integral Ring Metro project has been elevated to a new level of national importance, with the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) now exercising direct supervision over its implementation. Project Inducted into Central Pragati Monitoring Platform
The project was recently inducted into the Centre's Pragati (Pro-Active Governance and Timely Implementation) platform, a centralized monitoring mechanism specifically designed to identify and resolve hurdles for critical infrastructure projects, particularly in the transportation sector. This induction has triggered significant activity within state bureaucratic corridors, with a high-level review meeting convened to assess progress.
A closed-door session held at the chief secretary's office last week brought together key stakeholders including representatives from MahaMetro, officials from the Thane municipal commissioner's office, the district collector, and senior state government officials. The team is scheduled to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the project's progress on April 29, according to statements from senior officials involved in the process.
Project Details and Opposition Concerns
The metro corridor represents a significant transportation upgrade for Thane, featuring 22 stations designed to connect Thane railway station with the city's far-flung areas. The proposed route passes through densely populated neighborhoods and includes a substantial 2.3-kilometer underground stretch to navigate urban congestion.
However, the project faces mounting opposition from multiple fronts. The Thane unit of NCP (SP) has publicly questioned the necessity of the entire project, raising serious concerns about its high financial cost, potential environmental impact, and the possibility that construction and operation might actually worsen existing traffic congestion problems rather than alleviate them.
Adding to the controversy, a group of residents from Hiranandani Estate recently met with Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik to express their dissatisfaction with what they describe as random modifications to the metro route in their vicinity. These residents have voiced concerns about how route changes might affect their neighborhood's character and accessibility.
