Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Friday urged member nations of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) to adopt a unified stance against terrorism, emphasizing that there must be no double standards in combating the menace. Speaking at the SCO Defence Ministers' meeting in New Delhi, Singh stressed that terrorism in all its forms and manifestations should be condemned unequivocally.
Strong Message Against Terrorism
Singh highlighted the need for collective efforts to address the growing challenges posed by terrorism. He called for a comprehensive approach that includes cutting off financial support to terrorist groups and dismantling their infrastructure. The minister also underscored the importance of preventing the use of the internet and social media for radicalization and recruitment by terrorist organizations.
India's Commitment to SCO
Reiterating India's commitment to regional security, Singh said that New Delhi is ready to work closely with SCO partners to enhance cooperation in defense and security. He noted that the SCO platform provides an opportunity to share best practices and strengthen mutual trust among member states.
The meeting, attended by defense ministers and senior officials from SCO member countries, discussed a range of issues including joint military exercises, counter-terrorism operations, and regional stability. Singh's remarks come amid heightened tensions in the region, with several SCO members facing threats from terrorist groups.
No Room for Double Standards
In his address, Singh made it clear that countries cannot differentiate between 'good' and 'bad' terrorists. He urged all nations to adopt a zero-tolerance policy towards terrorism and avoid any form of justification for terrorist acts. The minister's statement reflects India's consistent position on the issue, which calls for a unified global response to terrorism.
Strengthening SCO's Role
Singh also emphasized the need to strengthen the SCO's role in maintaining peace and security in the region. He proposed greater intelligence sharing and coordination among member states to preempt terrorist attacks. Additionally, he called for measures to prevent the flow of arms and ammunition to terrorist groups.
The SCO, comprising China, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan, has been increasingly focusing on security issues. India, which assumed the presidency of the SCO in 2022, has been actively pushing for enhanced cooperation in counter-terrorism and regional stability.
Singh's remarks were well-received by the delegates, who acknowledged the need for a unified approach to tackle the common threat of terrorism. The meeting concluded with a joint statement reaffirming the commitment of SCO member states to combat terrorism without any discrimination.
