India's National Security Advisor Ajit Doval on Tuesday described the opening of the Strait of Hormuz as a welcome development, speaking at the BRICS conclave. He expressed cautious optimism over the Memorandum of Understanding reached between the United States and Iran, which he said would contribute to global energy security.
India welcomes US-Iran MoU
"India welcomes the MoU reached between the US and Iran. We have got cautious optimism, and we hope that it will work. It will help energy security," Doval said during the BRICS meeting. The Strait of Hormuz is a critical chokepoint for global oil shipments, with about 20% of the world's petroleum passing through it daily.
Impact on energy markets
The reopening of the strait, which had been partially blocked due to regional tensions, is expected to stabilize oil prices and ensure smoother supply chains for energy-importing nations like India. India, the world's third-largest oil consumer, relies heavily on imports from the Middle East. Analysts estimate that a stable Strait of Hormuz could reduce crude oil price volatility by up to 15%.
BRICS platform for dialogue
The BRICS conclave, comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, provided a platform for discussing regional security issues. Doval's remarks underscore India's strategic interest in maintaining open sea lanes and fostering diplomatic solutions to conflicts that threaten global economic stability. He reiterated India's commitment to multilateralism and peaceful resolution of disputes.
