Uganda's Army Chief Sparks Diplomatic Firestorm with Unprecedented Demands on Turkey
Uganda's military commander, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has ignited a severe diplomatic controversy by issuing a series of extraordinary ultimatums to Turkey. In posts on the social media platform X, the general demanded a staggering $1 billion payment alongside what he described as "the most beautiful woman" in Turkey for marriage, threatening to completely sever bilateral relations if his conditions are not fulfilled.
Security Dividend Demands and Marriage Proposal
Kainerugaba, who serves as Uganda's army chief and is the son of long-serving President Yoweri Museveni, framed the $1 billion demand as a "security dividend" for Uganda's extensive military involvement in Somalia. Ugandan troops have been actively engaged in African Union missions combating the Islamist militant group Al-Shabab for nearly two decades.
"On top of the $1 billion from Turkey, I want the most beautiful woman in that country for a wife!" Kainerugaba declared in one of his now-deleted posts that quickly went viral across social media platforms.
Thirty-Day Ultimatum and Consequences
The general issued a strict thirty-day deadline for Turkey to comply with his demands, warning of severe diplomatic consequences should they fail to do so. "If Turkey does not address our problems, we will sever our diplomatic relations within 30 days," he stated unequivocally.
Kainerugaba outlined specific retaliatory measures that would follow, including the closure of Turkey's embassy in Uganda's capital Kampala and the imposition of restrictions on Turkish Airlines operations. "For Turkey it's a really simple deal... Either they pay us or I close their embassy here. They can reciprocate and shut our embassy in Turkey as well. No problem," he added with striking bluntness.
Accusations Against Turkey and Travel Warning
The Ugandan military leader leveled serious accusations against Ankara, claiming that Turkey has benefited significantly from infrastructure and operational agreements in Mogadishu while Uganda has shouldered the primary security burden against militants. He characterized the current bilateral relationship as "serious" and went so far as to advise Ugandan citizens to avoid travel to Turkey "for your own safety."
Parallel Declaration of Support for Israel
In the same series of social media posts, Kainerugaba made another startling declaration regarding Israel. "I am ready to deploy 100,000 Ugandan soldiers to Israel, under my command, to protect the Holy Land, the land of Jesus Christ our God," he proclaimed, expressing unequivocal support for Israel amidst ongoing regional tensions.
History of Controversial Remarks
This incident represents the latest in a pattern of provocative public statements from Kainerugaba that have repeatedly drawn international attention and diplomatic complications:
- In 2022, he offered 100 Ankole cows to Italy in exchange for marrying its Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, threatening to capture Rome if his proposal was rejected
- President Museveni was forced to apologize for his son's remarks, criticizing him for interfering in other nations' affairs
- That same year, Kainerugaba threatened military action against neighboring Kenya, resulting in his temporary removal from his position and an official apology from the Ugandan government
Official Responses and Policy Clarifications
As of now, neither Turkish nor Somali authorities have issued immediate responses to Kainerugaba's latest inflammatory statements. Ugandan government officials have also remained silent regarding whether these remarks represent official foreign policy or merely reflect the general's personal views.
The diplomatic community is closely monitoring the situation, awaiting clarification from Kampala about whether these unprecedented demands carry the weight of state policy or constitute another instance of Kainerugaba's controversial personal diplomacy that has previously required official apologies and damage control from the Ugandan government.
