A candidate contesting the upcoming municipal elections in Akola created an unusual scene on Monday by submitting his mandatory security deposit entirely in coins and small denomination currency notes. The act briefly tested the patience of election officials and added a moment of levity to the formal nomination process.
Nomination Fee in Loose Change
Laxmikant Agrawal, who is representing the Loktantrik Janadhar Party from Ward 15, arrived at the office of the returning officer to file his nomination papers. For the Rs 5,000 security deposit, he presented a collection of loose change that included:
- Rs 5 and Rs 10 coins
- Currency notes of Rs 10, Rs 20, and Rs 50 denominations
- A few Rs 500 notes
The unconventional payment method meant that election staff had to spend several minutes carefully counting the coins, leading to a temporary delay in the proceedings. This unusual sight drew the attention of other candidates and visitors present at the election office.
A Deposit "From the People"
Speaking to reporters after filing his nomination, Agrawal explained the reasoning behind his coin-based deposit. He stated that the amount had been painstakingly collected from local residents of his ward. "The money has been given by the people, coin by coin," Agrawal said. He connected this grassroots fundraising to his campaign promise, adding, "If elected, I will work sincerely for the people's welfare and address people's issues."
Rules Followed, Deposit Accepted
Despite the minor inconvenience and the extra time required for counting, election officials confirmed that the deposit was fully accepted. The payment complied with all election rules and regulations, as there is no stipulation on the form in which the security deposit must be paid, as long as the full amount is tendered.
The incident provided a lighter interlude amidst the routine formalities of the ongoing civic election activity in Akola. It highlighted a candidate's attempt to symbolically demonstrate his direct connection with the common people and their contributions to his political journey.
